A conservative blog is warning people not to give money to Halton MP Garth Turner.

What’s Right Is Right says they have spoken to Halton Liberals and says Turner is cyber-begging.

Spoke with a few confirmed Halton Liberals this morning who have received phone calls from the Halton Liberal Riding Association over the weekend, not the Federal Lib’s who when they mentioned Garth Turner they were told “make sure you donate through the RIDING association and NOT on Garth’s site.”

The blogger goes on to say that donations of 20 dollars or under do not have to have tax receipts and that the riding may not see a cent.

Interesting comment from one of the Repo Posters…saying that they got a phone call from the Halton LPC Riding Association asking for funds. Not weird in anyway. That happens right?

The telemarketer then reminded the supporter to “donate to the riding association and not through Garth’s site.”

Hmmm, that IS quite interesting. The riding and the candidate working AGAINST each other in fundraising duties. Repo will continue to investigate this breaking news.

The blog is out of Burlington. Huh? I’m not getting the beef.
On March 30th, Garth Turner posted about his fundraising and on March 31st he posted on the why/how of donating to an MP’s campaign online.

Under new election fundraising rules, supporters of a candidate can toss a bill into a hat (or a jar, or a hand), or in this case a PayPal account, and it goes to the cause without the same bureaucracy as a larger donation.

“All contributions over $20 must be receipted and reported.” Elections Canada.
If the Halton Liberal Association does not want Mr. Turner soliciting online, then the Association needs to make that very clear, there is nothing online saying they have a problem. Turner:

The local Liberals have no funds, after an expensive federal leadership convention. In order to mount a credible campaign against the Harper machine, my volunteers will need tens of thousands of dollars – starting next Friday when the signs arrive.

Ontario has 106 federal ridings.
If people chose to hit Mr. Turners PayPal account and make their donation to the Halton Liberal Riding Association, what is the problem? If they chose to make a small donation directly to Mr. Turner, what is the problem?
Can an Elections Canada official indicate what is not permissible or accurate about this donation page?
Why is a candidate coloured shady if money is held in trust when the writ hasn’t been dropped?

“A registered party can issue tax receipts and authorize its registered electoral district associations to issue tax receipts for eligible monetary contributions.”

Turner is a sitting MP, playing fast or loose with ethics is not in his staff interest’s or his re-election interests.
Paypal is registered, all donations can be easily tracked.  Mr. Turner indicates tax receipts will be mailed to donors.

“You will receive a tax credit receipt by return mail.”

There is no warning about cyber giving on The Liberal Party of Canada (Ontario) website.
