Colby Cosh has one of the better takes on the announcement by Elizabeth May and Stephane Dion regarding the decision not to run a liberal candidate in the riding of Central Nova.

Andrew Coyne does also, speculating this may be more about a move against the NDP who were approached by May about a month ago. The NDP rejected her proposal.

The side story to these leaders decisions is Vancouver-Kingsway Green candidate Kevin Potvin. He was featured in a Globe and Mail 2006 article because he wrote and inflated a wiki article on himself. He is in the news today because of an article he wrote in his socialist paper in 2002, in which he stated:

“When I saw the first tower cascade down into that enormous plume of dust and paper, there was a little voice inside me that said, ‘Yeah!’ When the second tower came down the same way, that little voice said, ‘Beautiful!’ When the visage of the Pentagon appeared on the TV with a gaping and smoking hole in its side, that little voice had nearly taken me over, and I felt an urge to pump my fist in the air,” Retrieved April 13, 2007 from In a follow up interview, he agreed that he “still endorses the “totality” of that editorial”

MacLeans Magazine has a good time-line on the Red Green announcement, NDP and Conservative reaction as well as Green Leader’s May’s react to Potvin’s 3 year old article:

“If those views reflect his real views, if he hasn’t been in some way misrepresented from sections taken out of context…he will not be a candidate for the Green Party of Canada because I would not sign his nomination papers,” May said. “Those views are despicable.”

The Vancouver-Kingsway Green Party candidates apology did not go far enough for Elizabeth May.

“I apologize for the way my essay of four years ago has been characterized. I stand strongly against all forms of violence and I always have,” Potvin said.

“I was revolted by the imagery of that morning and openly sharing my contemplation of the source and nature of that revulsion. Some sentences out of their context may appear insensitive.”

After the news conference, the Green Party issued a statement from Potvin which phrased the apology differently.

“Nearly five years ago, I wrote a piece on the tragedy of the Sept. 11th attacks on the World Trade Center. Today, I would like to completely and unequivocally apologize for any offence or hurt that my writing may have potentially caused,” declares the statement.

May said she expects the candidate, who was acclaimed last month in Vancouver Kingsway, to issue a “significantly deeper” apology than the one delivered Friday.

Update: April 15, 2007 Elizabeth May has chosen not to sign Potvin’s nomination and Potvin reponds.

In other political blogging news What’s Right is Right, a conservative blog out of Burlington set up to monitor Halton MP Garth Turner; again quotes anonymous Halton liberals saying:

…that Garth Turner, in the darkness of the night on Tuesday, held a nomination meeting / coronation acclamation in Oakville to become the official candidate for the Liberal party.

…Here is some background info. Team Weasel held a secret nomination meeting last Tuesday. The membership of the riding were NOT told of this meeting. Word was there were a few people wanting to mount a campaign against Garth for the nomination.

I have received a number of emails from members (ive withheld their names as per their request) of how upset they were. Jose Zlater has started his campaign months ago for the nomination but after Garth crossed the floor, he was pushed aside by Gerard Kennedy and Dion. He hasnt been seen at a liberal riding meeting since.

I’ve posted some of the emails I got from the Liberals and from what I hear, its not stopping their. They have emailed the party HQ and they are demanding answers.

On April 4, 2007 Turner posted about the Halton Liberal nomination meeting:

My nomination papers are done; the meeting to formalize my candidacy is next week; Ken Dryden has agreed to come into the riding to help raise money at a cocktail gig; the campaign team has met many times and have roles assigned; the door-knocking blitz is ongoing; the campaign phone and email blast software have been installed; the budget and campaign strategy are written; the sign crews have been assigned; and our 48,000 square-foot, former Wal-Mart location, headquarters is being repainted a fetching red.

Being somewhat a fanatic about spelling this is the second time in a week that the Conservatives have published something with spelling/grammer mistakes.

    Pretty sad.

I think Steve Smith might take exception to calling this the Red Green show, although it is almost as funny as the real thing. Does Duct Tape get used????

National Post “columnist” Colby Cosh is a 30 year old unmarried man living in a basement suite with his cat and takes Carribbean cruises with geriatric white men in order to give them a good “talking” to.
Interesting “lifestyle” choices, though I guess the Post has to have at least one of these on staff to get that (ahem) “alternative” viewpoint.
Not that there’s anything WRONG with that.

Hey blogger boy - you find interesting people to take your ideological cues from. Does he help you find pillows and matching curtains too?
