ABC News reports law enforcement says, “there was a single gunman, firing at least two 9mm semi-automatic pistols. They said he may have been wearing a bulletproof vest.”

At least 31 people are feared 33 people are dead in the worst ever gun rampage on an American university campus.

Dozens more were injured before the gunman was himself killed.

It is not clear yet if he took his own life or was shot by police.

The tragedy happened at the Virginia Tech college in Virginia.

Police say the heavily-armed gunman opened fire in a classroom and dormitory.

Witnesses said he entered the college with an “ungodly” amount of ammunition looking for his girlfriend.

He reportedly locked students in a dormitory before opening fire. He was said to be a young Asian.

The figure of 31 dead includes the gunman, whose name has not been released. It is not known if he was a student. (Police say the killer committed suicide)

This is the worst school shooting in the US since August 1966 at the University of Texas. Charles Whitman killed his mother and wife, then killed 15 people on the campus and wounded 31. There have been 19 school shootings in the US since 1997.

The Canadian House of Commons expressed  shock, sorrow and sympathy for students, families, faculty and the community of Blacksburg.
