Mississauga journalist attacked

No arrests have been made in the April 17th attack of a Pakistan journalist in Mississauga.

35 year old  Jawaad Faizi who writes for Pak_izah intirnashinal=Pakeeza international (the largest Urdu language paper in North America) was treated and released after 2 men  upset with his work approached his car, began yelling and smashing his windows. They fled when they saw him dailing 911.

Faizi had been previously verbally threatened for his coverage of a Pakistan-based religious organisation, Idara Minhaj-ul-Quran and its leader, Cleric Allama Tahir-Ul-Qadri. The threats were reported to Peel Regional Police.

Faizi came to Canada in 2002 as a political refugee to escape the violence in Pakistan. He had been attacked and hospitalized in Pakistan 8 years ago for reporting on a known terrorist.

His wifes father who had also been a writer, was murdered in Pakistan five years ago.

Faizi and his editor began receiving threats after he wrote about Muhammad Tahir Ul Qadri’s visit to a Toronto mosque in January.

According to Library and Archives Canada there are about 155 ethic language newspapers in Canada. Canadian Journalists for Free Expression have strongly condemned the attack. The Pakistan Post is published in Toronto, Calgary and Montreal as well as 16 US cities.
