A Fleming College student was arrested on the weekend after writing threats on his blog.
(the blog has been taken offline)
City police Sgt. Walter DiClemente said police received a complaint Friday from someone who had read the student’s blog.
“They were disturbed and alarmed at what they read,” DiClemente said. “We were then able to identify the author.”
After the man was arrested Saturday, DiClemente said police shut down the blog.
“After events like the shooting in Virginia, it’s common to see incidents with copycat elements,” DiClemente said. “Surely we are not the only jurisdiction where there were similar threats.”
DiClemente said people often don’t realize the severe consequences to such a threat.
Fleming has five campuses, two in the Peterborough Ontario area, and is an Applied Arts and Technology Institute.
21 year old Joshua Bryn Bauman was charged with uttering death threats and mischeif and was released on bail.
He is permitted to attend classes, has to live with the person who posted his bond, but is not allowed to blog.
He was released from police custody yesterday on $3,000 bail with no deposit.
He was placed under court orders to live with his surety on Sherbrooke Street and cannot possess any weapons while his case is before the court.
He is also prohibited from going to Fleming College unless he is going to class and cannot write on any online blogs.
The Peterborough Examiner report says ‘cannot write on any blogs’ which is technically unclear - doesn’t say anything about forums, usenet, sites, email, so I’m assuming the judge, a lawyer or reporter isn’t technically literate or the court is permitting Bauman online access.
Er, the wording is a bit convoluted, blogs are online, one cannot comment to an offline blog. You can write posts offline, but they remain offline until you put them into the template and hit publish. The intertubes can be confusing.
The newspaper quotes the college president as saying Bauman is suspended. So, how can you go to class if the college has suspended you?
Our investigation will determine what will happen. I’d prefer not to speculate on the results, but at this stage I can say that while the investigation is being carried out the student is suspended.”
Tilly said the investigation should take “a matter of weeks.”
Looks like friends, the college and the police responded quickly, Osprey Media’s online presence isn’t as adept. The court says Bauman can go to class, the college says the investigation will take weeks so he is suspended. It isn’t either or, but the article doesn’t reflect the time line. A judge saying a plaintiff can attend class does not mean the college will permit the plaintiff to attend class.
This article went online last night.
I know it’s a small paper, (Peterborough is a medium sized city of about 116 thousand people) but when the Drudge Report links to you, it’s wise to have an editor and technically saavy staff bring your work up to speed.
Osprey Media group publishes about 88 newspapers and magazines in 25 Ontario markets.

Hello! I was quite shocked today at work when I read that Josh had been arrested. The last time I saw him we were at a church camp last summer! His deliberations on the VTech shootings were nothing more than logical deductions on where the shooter was innefficient. The police will study what happened and perform identical calculations. The difference is that he gets arrested. There is nothing criminal in talking about how flawed a plan is. If anything, it is the ultimate insult against people who throw their lives away for so little gain. Thank You, Daniel
You are welcome Daniel.
Who took down his blog?
Did he, or did the police request the ISP do so?
Did you see his post(s)?
Logical deductions on Cho’s shooting inefficiency still leave 33 dead, and are not socially logical on a public forum before families bury their dead.
Cho’s church minister couldn’t absorb his knowledge and experience of him with the reality of what he did.
As you say, as the police go through it they’ll make decisions as will the school, his lawyer and the courts.
I doubt your friend expected to wind up on a heavily trafficked US news site being labelled a copy cat.
The college president showed discretion in not releasing information; given he is 21 and is charged, his name came from public court records.
