The late Rev. Jerry Falwell scrapped concepts of child development (young children 0-5 are non-sexual) when he came out roaring against purple teletubbie Tinky Winky, calling the character gay, he had his eye on the political, not developmental. (Tinky Winky’s transitional object is a red purse)
Now it’s Poland. Children’s rights minister Ewa Sowinska wants psychologists to review The Teletubbies to see whether the show is appropriate for public television.
While the late Rev. Jerry Falwell can be ridiculed for his decisions about developmental psychology and kid’s shows, the situtation is a bit more tense in Poland. The country is deeply Catholic, and ultra conservative groups have adopted much of the religious right language currently being used in the US. (homosexual agenda, family values)
In regards to children’s programming and literature I hadn’t noticed this before:
Tinky Winky’s psychological evaluation is being treated fairly light-heartedly by many people here.
One radio station asked its listeners to vote for the most suspicious children’s show. Some e-mailed in to point out that Winnie the Pooh had only male friends.
Piglet, Christopher, Tigger, Eeyore, Owl…hmmm.

Jerry Falwell came out?? Now that’s what I call a revelation!
ar arr arrrr! That was unitentional.:^)
The debate is deadly real, adults that don’t care to study childhood development take an old issue and make it new again.
Hey, it worked for Jerry Falwell.
Hopefully Poland will pay attention to what the EU is legitimately attempting to point out, the Polish government maintains some dignity, gets sound advice, distributes it widely and puts this to bed. The larger issues of the importing of well oiled US culture wars are disturbing. Human beings attaching a peculiar fundamentalist ideology of hate in an export.
