Free Dominion – not quite the media attention they hoped for

Last week Free Dominion, a socially conservative Canadian site said they had waited years for a Canadian Human Rights Complaint and were prepared to stand their ground.

BigCityLib has been posting updates. Free Dominion has had some blog attention from SoCons and Blogging Tories and an article in The Kingston Whig Standard.  Free Dominion posters have been harassing the complainant which may lead to more trouble for the site. Site owner Connie Wilkins was a guest on The Michael Coren CFRB radio show.

Free Dominion has set up a thread where they can keep blogs, forums and traditional media reports on the Canadian Human Rights Commission investigation and complaint in one place.

We have been waiting for six and a half years and the day has finally arrived, somebody is going to try to silence Free Dominion using the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

Update:  The Baltimore Reporter, World Net Daily, Sun Myung Moon’s Washington Times and The Globe and Mail have mentioned Free Dominion. Mostly they’ve focused on Bill Whatcott.
He’s colourful, here is a classic example of his speech and behavior in Edmonton in June. The Globe has the most salient point from Michael Geist, internet expert and law professor in Ottawa.

Michael Geist says the owners of the site can still be held responsible for the content that other users post on its forum.

“There is the possibility, but not the certainty, of liability for those who host content that violates the law [in Canada],” Mr. Geist said.

Do you know for a fact that they have been harrassing the complainant? There are dozens of regulars on Free Dominion. I doubt most of us have tried contacting her.

Speaking for myself, this is way more media attention than I had anticipated. My sources tell me there could be more. Last night Connie was on Rob Breakenridge in Calgary, and I have a hunch more media people will be addressing this issue. Connie has done at least a couple of other interviews on this.

Hi Suzanne, you have a great go to hub-blog for the latest on social conservative political blogs.

Just what I’ve seen, slogging through the threads is quite the chore.
However, that is not my problem or interest, it is up to CHRC investigators, Free Dominion owners and law enforcement to make determinations.

Free Dominion encompasses a small spectrum of social, economic conservatives and separatists – from moderates through to far right. And that’s a good thing, the more extreme viewpoints and rhetoric out in the open, the better.

It is possible since I’ve written this post there is more, I understand traditional media attention is important to the owners agenda.
