CODEPINK and Global Exchange cofounder Medea Benjamin and retired Colonel and diplomat Ann Wright, were denied entry into Canada today (Wednesday, October 3). The two women were headed to Toronto to discuss peace and security issues at the invitation of the Toronto Stop the War Coalition.
Canada generally refuses entry to anyone who has been convicted of a criminal offence, regardless of the nature of it. Those with convictions, however, may apply to be rehabilitated, which involves filing paperwork and paying a processing fee ranging from $200 to $1,000.
They have been arrested in the US for none violent protesting of the Iraq War and according to AP will have to apply for ‘criminal rehabilitation’ and pay the fine.
At least 4 MP’s (Members of Parliament) Peggy Nash (NDP Parkdale High Park), Libby Davies (NDP Vancouver East), Paul Dewar (NDP Ottawa Centre) and Peter Julian (NDP Burnaby—New Westminster) have spoken up.
