Liberal MP Garth Turner’s post on the federal Conservative data base called CMIS got attention from media and privacy experts this week.
Good.
Knowing any contact with a federal Conservative riding office puts me into their data base for their use is useful to me.
NDP, Green and Liberals allow voters to see their contact ’file’ on request, and the federal privacy commissioner has launched an inquiry. What the federal party is doing is not illegal, the moral and ethical questions being raised may help lead to Canadian law catching up to the digital world.
The story on the federal Conservative data mining started when Rosh Hashanah ‘greetings’ from the Prime Minister’s office showed up at Canadian Jewish households. Many had had no contact with synagogue or Jewish organization lists, or were registered with the political party. None Jewish Canadians also received the Jewish New Year greetings from the PMO.
