I wish every legislator and every bureaucrat in Canada had time to watch this presentation by Larry Lessig. It’s one of the clearest presentations of revision of copyright law I’ve ever seen.
He uses John Phillip Sousa, BMI and airplanes to explain open source. Sound boring?
Far from it.
The Bush/Blair remix is more than worth your time.
You’ll come away more aware of why the stranglehold of ownership isn’t working. He addresses the two extremism’s, criminalizing and abolition and offers balance.
Lessing speaks to democracy of creators using technology for the seamless blending of folk, pop and haute culture, and encourages the cooperation of social institutions that assist culture; business, government, media, church, arts and entertainment, education and the social sector.
Seriously, Lessig is not boring.
Your kids have learned user generated content as easily as you learned to watch TV. We are in a read-write participatory culture.
I’m sending you over to Achievable Ends to have a look, Kinnon is the wiz of all things video and he has both an embed and a link if head to if you can’t play it off his blog.

I still believe that Lessig misses the mark. I believe that people who are the first to come up with something and coyright it have the right to limit or be open as much as they desire. Why should some outside entity dictate what should be done with something that is owned by somebody? To me it makes no sense.
The fact remains there needs to be protection for people who own the copyright. It makes sense to ask for permission to use something that is copyrighted. We need to respect peoples right of ownership. To me ownership, copyright, etc. IS democratic. The right to own, buy, sell, give, keep, etc. personal property. I have no problem with those who have copyrighted material giving it to be open sourced. However, to dictate to those same people that it must be open source I have a problem with. Also, if someone uses copyrighted material without the consent of the owner what is so wrong with the owner (if he chooses) to pursue his rights under the law to reclaim, attempt to prevent incidents in the future, etc.? Just some thoughts I have really never got answered regarding Lessig. I have him on TV and have always come away with more questions than answers to his comments. He seems to not understand how people who own something have a right to protect themselves from those who are using unauthorized material. Do you have or need any clarifications to what I have said or what you have said to help me understand him? Could it be a misunderstanding on my part or is it a change in culture to be able enable the “millinium generation” which doesn’t like to be told what to do. Just some thoughts and observations.
