American Spectator wrote Friday James Dobson was going to endorse Republican candidate Mike Huckabee.

Paul Weyrich, founder of the Free Congress Foundation and co-founder of the Moral Majority, says he just saw an email from James Dobson in which Dobson “denies ferociously that he has decided to endorse Huckabee. He said it was made up. He has no idea who came up with this, but he is trying to stop it.”

Weyrich reiterated that Dobson’s denial was “in ferocious terms.” He would not say to whom Dobson’s e-mail was addressed and said he no longer had the email, so could not read it off. Weyrich, founder of the Free Congress Foundation and co-founder of the Moral Majority, endorsed Romney this week. But he is certainly in the circle of people who could have seen such an email.

Turns out Fotf second hand man Tom Minnery says he was the source of the email to The American Spectator.

Tom Minnery, senior vice president of Dobson’s organization, Focus on the Family, says he was the source of the email sent to the American Spectator’s Web site, saying there was not going to be an endorsement. Minnery read his email: ”There is absolutely no truth to your blog report that Dr. Dobson is about to endorse Governor Huckabee. Dr. Dobson is not close to endorsing anyone in the ‘08 presidential primary. I expect you to make a correction.”

The American Spectator:

Sources close to Dobson say that within the next ten days he is coordinating an endorsement plan with the presidential campaign of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. According to a Huckabee insider in Iowa, the event would be staged in that state at a rally, followed by a bus tour across the state, and an appearance by Huckabee on Dobson’s radio show, which is heard nationally.

Contacted again by The American Spectator, those who initially spoke on background about the Dobson endorsement insisted that as of last night, plans were being put in place by the Huckabee campaign for an announcement and endorsement tour, and stood by their account. Rumors about a potential Dobson endorsement of Huckabee have been swirling in Washington for several days, and would have come at a time when other social conservatives are beginning a serious run on endorsement events. The board of the National Right to Life Committee is holding a meeting this weekend to discuss a potential endorsement strategy, and Donald Wildmon in the past 24 hours has endorsed Huckabee.

Pat Robertson made news this week by saying he was endorsing Guiliani in the perpetual election race.
