Have you ever heard of Stormfront?

A 21 year old Calgary woman who posted on the nazi christian identity white supremacy site based in the US has, and is paying a price. (Stormfront has a Canadian thread) Between 2003 and 2006, Jessica Beaumont, writing under Jessy Destruction posted 1023 messages at the Canadian Stormfront forum.

A Calgary woman has been fined $1,500 and ordered to pay $3,000 in compensation to an Ottawa man after the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal upheld a complaint about Internet hatred.

In a ruling released yesterday, the tribunal issued a permanent order requiring Jessica Beaumont, a 21-year-old Calgary retail clerk and self-described “full-time Nazi,” to stop posting hate messages on the Internet.

It fined her and ordered her to compensate Richard Warman for abusive comments she posted about him online after the Ottawa lawyer filed his complaint in January 2005. Warman said the tribunal’s ruling “sends the message that spreading hate propaganda through the Internet is illegal and that people will be held accountable for their actions.”

She posted against other races, against homosexuals, Jews and directed extreme anger toward Warman, who has brought 15 complaints before the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal under Section 13, which deals with online hate.
Predictably  Connie Fournier of Free Dominion through Tristen Emmanuel of Equipping Christians for the Public Square is peddling her opinion to the US that quoting the bible online will get you five years in prison. Piling right on is a well known Canadian neoconservative blog, Small Dead Animals.

Here is Beaumont’s message to Warman:

We’ve been `Warned’ !! You’d better stop posting your vile, digusting “HATE” on the internet!. Unless you want 3 squares and a cot for 9  months…. I “HATE” you Warman I can only hope that I live long enough to piss on your useless grave, you kyke. (They are not her words, she quoted off another Stormfront thread after she found out about the complaint)

The Canadian Human Rights Tribunal Section 13:

It is a discriminatory practice for a person or a group of persons acting in concert to communicate telephonically or to cause to be so communicated, repeatedly, in whole or in part by means of the facilities of a telecommunication undertaking within the legislative authority of Parliament, any matter that is likely to expose a person or persons to hatred or contempt by reason of the fact that that person or those persons are identifiable on the basis of a prohibited ground of discrimination.

The CHRT is a civil proceeding and US readers don’t know that distinction. Many Canadians don’t either.
Warman has been awarded $48,500 since he began filing complaints about online hate communities.  Beaumont is not going to jail for posting this on Stormfront:

Oh yes I can!
This type of sh*t just boils my blood. They are allowed freedom of “sexuality” but I can’t speak my mind being freedom of speech AND religion? It says right in the bible that homosexual relations are punishable by death.
Quote: Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.
LEVITICUS 18:22
Quote: If a man lies with man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.
LEVITICUS 20:13
So wouldn’t that be infringing on MY religious beliefs? On MY freedomof speech?
Hell, they can be fags till the day they die, and I’ll be with God for my life. But my thoughts should not allow them to get money for their “suffering”. They should be getting a lot of money in hell then, they will be doing A LOT of suffering there.
I know my post should be I the theology section, but I think it should stay her, it is relevant.

They are two verses in the Old Testament holiness code and part of 8 commonly called clobbers verses against homosexuality. She has not been fined for quoting the bible or even using the bible. The complaint has about 45 examples of her comments.

Here are the number of cases the CHRT has resolved when mediation has failed over the past 5 years.

Any Canadian citizen can file with the Canadian Human Rights Commission based on their rights in the Charter.

Under the Canadian Human Rights Act, it is against the law for any employer or provider of a service that falls within federal jurisdiction to discriminate on the basis of:

Those are acts, Section 13 deals with Internet speech and that is what has people across the political and legal spectrum concerned.

Since 2001, 61 Internet hate complaints have been filed.
9 were dropped, 27 are in the investigative stage, and 8 have been ruled on.
In the 8 final rulings, all respondents (ie: Jessica Beaumont) were determined to have contravened Section 13.

Jessica Beaumont would have to disregard the ruling for a long period of time, before ‘five years in jail.’

In 2006 white supremacist Thomas Winnicki violated a ruling that he close down his Northern Alliance/Vanguard News sites. He didn’t and was found in contempt and was sentenced to nine months in jail. He is appealing.

Beaumont is now an adult.
She can discern context. She can grasp threat to others.
Stormfront exists for that purpose, a place for angry racists to vent and build relationships. At least one group of chatters have met up off line.

To see the full complaint and some of what Jessica wrote go here.
You decide context, you decide intent.
The commission looks at the term ‘hate’ ‘contempt’ ‘private versus public’ language, ‘awareness’.
Jessica Beaumont is on record stating she does not care about her speech, she doesn’t care who she offends. She doesn’t care who she threatens. She doesn’t care who she hurts. She understands her attitude in telling the Commission: she’ll call First Nations ‘chugs’ to her sister but not to her friends.
She clearly gets it.

As the complaint proceeded she took down her MySpace page with a Catholic church sign with swastikas on it that read:

CURCH OF THE DEAD
WARMAN SOCIETY
WARMAN HATERS
ALLWAYS WELCOME

Waxman is not Jewish.
Beaumont wasn’t happy with the filing and posted,

(it was)…all because of that retarded jew warman” and that “we all know he does this because he is a very low and disgraceful animal”.

Let’s not call this Christian, it’s not.
Let’s not get hysterical about the bible being quoted, the devil can quote it.
Let’s not get hyper about Christianity or the bible being persecuted, they aren’t.

Reading the report, it strike me Jessica Beaumont doesn’t know who to hate, she targets everyone. Over 1000 postings in three years is a lot of time spent at a hate site.
She is a veritable scattered shotgun blast of anger. She lashed out at everyone, (except the white race); and reasonably the Commission ruled she is small potatoes, given the hate peddlers they do deal with.
She can take classes, she can receive counselling, if she wants to use the bible she can go to church or classes and learn the rest of it.
Given her meager salary, the fine was set low.
She is obviously aware, and smart enough to understand the larger picture.
If she wants to. It takes time after being immersed in hate groups to find your own belief system and figure out where you were. It takes help from others.

Hate groups target young people, Beaumont is a classic example of a disenfranchised, vulnerable, malleable target for recruit, easy pickings.
Stormfront has been careful and precise in seting up a welcoming online community using deliberate marketing and promotion strategies.
