This is a continuance of the split in the Anglican Church. The first bishop to leave was Donald Harding, who came out of retirement to put himself under the authority of South America and head the split. A second retired bishop from Manitoba, Malcolm Harding aligned himself with the Anglican Province of the Southern Cone this week. (The Southern Cone consists of Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina - 27 thousand members)
The Anglican Network is upset about blessing same sex marriages and preserving orthodoxy. After meeting in Burlington this week the splinter group has decided to open an office in Toronto, be a parallel church and assist Anglican Church members or churches that wish to leave the communion.
The Network currently consists of 16 parishes that have not formally cut all ties to The Anglican Church of Canada. There are 2 thousand Anglican Churches in Canada in 30 dioceses. The meeting was to decide the structure needed to formalize withdrawal.
J.I. Packer, a British born theologian was the featured speaker:
Prof. Packer said the Anglican Church of Canada has been “poisoned” by a liberal theology that “knows nothing of a God who uses [the Bible] to tell us things and knows nothing of sin in the heart and in the head.” He said the Church is being ruined by its attempts to “play catch-up with the culture” by adopting whatever “is the in-thing.”
…”Schism means unwarranted and unjustified separation from the rest of the Church [structure], causing an indefensible breach of unity,” said J.I. Packer, a Canadian who Time magazine called one of the 25 most influential evangelicals in America. “Those who are unfaithful to the heritage are the schismatics. It is not we who are the schismatics.”
No word yet on how everyone is going to divide the spoils.
The Anglican Church of Canada will have a statement by Archbishop Fred Hiltz read in it’s churches Sunday, December 2nd.
