The Denver Post has complied a list of violent acts in US churches since 1991.
During 1991 and 1999 there were three incidents, a robbery with violence, a hostage taking at Focus on the Family headquarters in Colorado (not a church) and a shooting/suicide in Texas that left 8 dead and seven wounded.
Since 2000:
AUG. 12, 2007 —A gunman opened fire in the sanctuary of First Congregational Church in Neosho, Mo., killing a pastor and two worshipers and wounding several others.
MAY 21, 2006 — Anthony Bell kills four of his in-laws during a church service at the Ministry of Jesus Christ Church in Baton Rouge, La. He abducts his wife and kills her.
FEB. 27, 2006 — A gunman opens fire during a service at Zion Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit, killing a woman and wounding two others. The suspect, Kevin Lorenzo Collins, later kills himself.
AUG. 29, 2005 — Freddie L. Cranshaw, who lived across the street from Sash Assembly of God Church in Sash, Texas, kills two men, including the pastor in the parking lot of the church. He then kills two women in a truck and returns home, where the police find him dead after a nine-hour standoff.
MARCH 12, 2005 — A man opens fire at a Living Church of God service in Brookfield, Wis. Five people, including the gunman, die at the Sheraton Hotel where the church meets, and three die later at the hospital. Gunman Terry Ratzmann, who was a member of the church, had lost his job but left no note as to why he chose to shoot people.
DEC. 18, 2004 — The longtime conductor of the Crystal Cathedral Orchestra, Johnny Carl, kills himself at the cathedral in Garden Grove, Calif., after an argument with another employee and a nine-hour standoff.
OCT. 5, 2003 — Sheilia W. Chaney Wilson shoots her mother, Jennie Mae Robinson, and the Rev. Johnny Clyde Reynolds in the sanctuary of Turner Monumental AME Church in Atlanta as they wait for the Sunday service to begin.
December 9, 2007 Another person injured in the New Life Church shooting in Colorado yesterday has died of their injuries, bringing the number of dead to five.
26 year old Tiffany Johnson, and 24 year old Philip Crouse were killed at the YWAM centre in Arvada Colorado, (a Denver suburb) 2 were wounded. 3 were killed at New Life Church Colorado Springs (about 120 kilometers south of the YWAM shooting) 4 were wounded.
Police are searching a home in Englewood (a Denver suburb) and will be holding a news conference later this morning. The names of the New Life Church victims have not been released, nor have police released information on the shooter(s).
Upate: Eighteen-year old Stephanie Works and 16-year old Rachel Works died in the shooting at New Life Church. Their father, 51 year old David Works is listed in fair condition at a Colorado Springs hospital. Police have not released the name of the murderer(s).
