Jim Coggins at Canadian Christianity has started a series: The State of the Canadian Church.

I don’t know how long the series is going to be, or where he is taking it, so far there are no surprises.

In Part One he asks the questions. Is Canada a nation of believers? Is church attendance in decline? He makes a good attempt to avoid evangelicalize (the magazine is evangelical)  avoid expert language of church planters and draws on the work of University of Lethbridge sociologist Reginald Bibby.

Church attendance in Canada is declining rapidly. Atheism is rising. Christian moral values are being replaced by secular ones. Canada is no longer a Christian nation, and Canadian Christians will soon be a persecuted minority.

These are among some of the understandings — and, in some cases, misunderstandings — prevalent among Canadians.

But what is the actual state of Canadian Christianity? That is the question that we hope to address in this series. The reality is that the situation is far more complex than it seems at first.

Part II: Shifting traditions takes a closer look at Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox  past and present numbers drawing from  Stats Can (Statistics Canada), and drawing on the research of Bruce Guenther, a church history and Mennonite studies professor.

I don’t know where the series is going so I don’t have anything to say. I don’t know anything about the magazine Canadian Christianity. (other than it’s evangelical and was BC Christian News)

I have one question. (sorry I’ve not heard of Outreach Canada prior to this article)

There is now one evangelical church for every 3,189 Canadians, a number that is inching closer to Outreach Canada’s first goal of having one church for every 2,000 Canadians.

My question is: Does Canada need one evangelical church for every 2,000 Canadians?

Outreach Canada is part of OC International, and International Mobilization Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado:

Since starting with two full-time staff in 1985, Outreach Canada now has fourteen full-time, seven part-time and two volunteer staff members, each of whom contribute significantly to our ministry effectiveness.
…All of our staff raise their support as home missionaries to Canada, relying fully on the Lord’s faithfulness for their support.

This organization appears to be affiliated with Dr. Luis Palau Ministries, but I may be way off base here. I’ve come across everything from New Life Church to Biola University, to Baptists, to Trinity Western University. Diverse. Outreach Canada is an affiliate of The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada.
