The seven mortal sins defined by The Roman Catholic Church in the 15th century.

Lust, gluttony, avarice, sloth, anger, envy and pride

No particular order. Sin in the Roman Catholic Church is divided into mortal and venial. Mortal sin unconfessed and not addressed with penitence damns you to hell forever.

The seven virtues.

Chastity, abstinence, temperance, diligence, patience, kindness and humility

No particular order, sin means ‘missing the mark’, an archer’s term, ’to fall short’.
Protestants don’t rate primary and secondary sin,  both denominations believe all sin separates us from God’s grace.
With Roman Catholics we believe in the standards of the 10 commandments, the beatitudes and the golden rule.
Forgiveness is sought in confession to and repentance before God; and we are encouraged to confess to each other (when appropriate) provide restitution, resolution and reconciliation for the community and our spiritual well-being, receiving  grace to do because of Jesus Christ our Priest. The help also comes from the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete which means ‘the one who comes alongside’.

To repent means to turn away from.

I fled Him, down the nights and down the days;
I fled Him, down the arches of the years;
I fled Him, down the labyrinthine ways
Of my own mind; and in the mist of tears
I hid from Him, and under running laughter.
Up vistaed hopes I sped;
And shot, precipitated,
Adown Titanic glooms of chasmèd fears,

From those strong Feet that followed, followed after.
          But with unhurrying chase,
         And unperturbèd pace,
         Deliberate speed, majestic instancy,
        They beat — and a voice beat
        More instant than the Feet –
        ”All things betray thee, who betrayest Me.”

The new set of sins released by The Roman Catholic Church for the age of globalization.

Genetic manipulations, environmental pollution, social inequality, social injustice, abortion and pedophilia

The new list has been published in L’Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper.
Roman Catholics are not going to confession like they used to, and Pope Benedict XVI isn’t happy. Indulgences are down,  The Vatican feels ‘the mass media blew up the issue of of priest paedophilia’ and believes the faithful have lost their sense of consequence, responsibility and urgency and are making do without God.

Seems to me the new global (social) sins are covered by the 15th century seven deadlies if we think about it. It’s the thinking that can be so hard.

“Strange, piteous, futile thing !
Wherefore should any set thee love apart ?
Seeing none but I makes much of naught” (He said),
“And human love needs human meriting :
How hast thou merited –
Of all man’s clotted clay the dingiest clot ?
Alack, thou knowest not
How little worthy of any love thou art !
Whom wilt thou find to love ignoble thee,
Save Me, save only Me ?
All which I took from thee I did but take,
Not for thy harms,
But just that thou might’st seek it in My arms.
All which thy child’s mistake
Fancies as lost, I have stored for thee at home :
Rise, clasp My hand, and come !”
Halts by me that footfall :
Is my gloom, after all,
Shade of His hand, outstretched caressingly ?
“Ah, fondest, blindest, weakest,
I am He Whom thou seekest !

    I really had not heard of this until just now. I cannot say that I disagree that each one is sin in some shape form our way.
    I have always thought that anything we do to desecrate the earth that is not done due to the need for survival is a sin. Such as littering! It is one of those things that alot of people tend not agree with me on.
    We are all called to be the care takers of this earth. Sinning is not just what we do but what we don’t! It is hard to be the care taker of the earth if we are puring motor oil out in the yard or throwing our Big Mac boxes out of the window.
    I am going to link a post to you. I really found this post insightful! Good work brother!

    this new sets of commandments shows that the church is conscious of the fact that in the modern times there exists a set of sins that she needs to combat. for those of us who are catholics, we take pride once again in the church that she has once again tried to alert the faithful and to instruct them in the right order of things. may the holy spirit abide in forever in the church.

    vatican donb’t need to publish new sins because ” All believers had a written law in their hearts…” as the Bible. They should also add the sin of lying to people becuase that what the RCC does… Believe on Christ and you shall be saved… The Bible is supreme over the Catholic church… They have no authority to define what is in the Bible for the Bible speaks for itself…
