A quick set up for my not-Canadian readers.
Yes, we are just as bigoted, sexist, racist and homophobic as anyone I call out from any country on BDBO for showing a lack of respect for others and for undermining human dignity and public service. There is no excuse for what you’ll see and hear below.

In 1991 The Conservative Party lost the election in Saskatchewan to the NDP. Over the years several Conservative Party members were convicted of fraud and the party never recovered.  Last fall the NDP lost the provincial election to the SaskParty (an alliance of Conservative and Liberals).
As they were moving offices to the opposition  offices side of the legislature the NDP found some boxes that had been left behind. Of course they opened them and found a tape made in 1991 of Conservative backroom party workers, wired, tired, drunk and acting bratty and juvenile.
Of course the NDP made the tape public.

On the 24 minute tape political opponents are verbally trashed, called names, both male and female opponents are mocked, female workers are hit on, there are jokes about letter bombs being sent to a political opponent, ethnic mockery, mimicry mockery of then US President Ronald Reagan, racist and homophobic remarks are laughed at in a collective craziness.
Only one person steps back from the stereotyping.

Turns out current Saskatchewan premier Brad Wall is on that tape.
As is the now Conservative MP for Regina-Lumsden-Lake-Centre, Tom Lukiwski.

We’ve all done things in our past that can come back to haunt us, was this a momentary lapse of judgement, stupidity or a deeply held beliefs, still held?
Lukiwski seems to be the oldest person at the group which makes his bragging bravado and hatred all the creepier.

Here is a transcript.
Here is a video with the current MP’s remarks.
The raw tape is at The Globe and Mail.

This isn’t a party or partisan issue, this is a people issue.
This isn’t about shooting the messengers, this is acknowledging how sordid and offensive we can be.

Both Premier Wall and the MP parliamentary secretary apologized immediately.  Lukiwski looks like a deer caught in the headlights.

The riding incumbent Larry Spencer was was kicked out of the Alliance party by Stephen Harper in 2003 for saying homosexuality should be outlawed and that a conspiracy is responsible for the successes of the gay rights movement.
Lukiwski won the seat in 2004 by 142 votes.
Premier Brad Wall ran for the Conservative Party in Swift Current in 1991.
He lost and won a seat with the SaskParty in 1999, becoming party leader in 2004.
Kathy Young is now the SaskParty executive director of communications.

Robert Fife at CTV has the Lukiwski apology, and I thought I was watching CNN when Fife says everyone knew there are some knuckle draggers in the party in a talkback Q&A with anchor Lloyd Robertson. (first report on right sidebar)  I’ve not seen that kind of remark on CTV National before by a senior correspondent.

The Canadian Press has some controversial comments made by MP’s over the years.
The Ottawa Citizen has a list of controversial remarks made by Conservative Party hopefuls prior to the heated 2004 federal election.
