So Ken Epps private members bill C-484 (Unborn victims of Crimes Act) is what he says it isn’t. No big surprise there.

Father Lucien Larre gives back his Order of Canada. So why didn’t he give it back sooner?
JJ has details of his past.

What Dr. Dawg said.

Governor General announcement

The Order of Canada

Update: A nun may give back her snowflake, she received it a year ago for her contribution to health care in the north. An Acadian former lieutenant-governor from New Brunswick Gilbert Finn, says he plans to return his.
Dr. Dawg showed up to the protest outside Rideau Hall (the Governor-Generals residence) and took pictures. The numbers of people present were not what organizers had anticipated.

It pisses me off that the media has turned this into another opportunity to open up the abortion “debate”. The debate was settled in 1988.

We have the best of all worlds in Canada with Charter that protects the right to pursue one’s religious beliefs and the right for a women to control her reproductive choices.

    Well said Beijing!

Beijing York, well said, there can be no complaints media is not covering all political aspects of the ‘debate.’

As a non-Canadian, I’m not quite sure what to make of things. I know the Morgentaler case was the Canadian equivalent of Roe V Wade, except that he was the abortion doctor, not the woman, and has been active in pushing the abortion-rights agenda.

I’m trying to picture an American equivalent; NARAL’s Kate Michelman might be the closest that I can come to, since no abortionist, save maybe the guy in Wichita (George Tiller, but I had to Google to get his name) who specializes in late-term abortions, would show up on radar. Were she to be given something like the Presidential Medal of Freedom or Congressional Medal of Honor, there would be a hissy-fit on the left, to be sure.

Were it not for Morganthaler, Buzz Hargrove might be the next most controversial pick, but even he seems to have done a good job heading up the CAW.

Peter Mansbridge got picked. I miss The National now that I’ve moved to Lexington and don’t get the CBC like we did in Midland.

Morgentaler was a public face in the work of striking down law which saw medical personnel and women imprisoned. He was part of a continuum of activists, even contraception was nationally illegal prior to 1969.

He also helped change Quebec law so a jury acquittal couldn’t be overturned on appeal.

    CBC has a good timeline.

I would think Roe vs. Wade is probably the reasonable comparison, the Criminal Code had to be addressed federally. The Charter is federal, and now an important component of the debate.

As I cruise the web I can’t help but notice that the editorialists I have read who are opposed to Morgentaler getting the Order of Canada are all men.

What’s up with that? If men had babies this wouldn’t even be an issue. They always have to be in charge, patriarchal and controlling.

While I may not approve of abortion personally there are times it is warranted and the last thing I will do is judge a woman for her choice. If a man decides to have an abortion I won’t judge him either.

That’s common, any reporter who deals with anti-abortionists can tell you that.

The National Post had an editorial on the Morgentaler feedback they got. The nays were overwhelmingly men.

A Catholic group handed in their founders snowflake today, she’s been dead for over 20 years.
