In 2006 the British SPCK (Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, founded 1698) sold off its chain of Christian bookshops to a Texas-based Orthodox Christian organisation called St Stephen the Great Charitable Trust. While traditionally the SPCK bookshops have been known for their wide range of intellectually-serious theology and Biblical scholarship, the new owners had a decidedly more right-wing agenda, which it quickly made clear by instructing shop managers that copies of the Koran should not be stocked.
Richard Bartholomew at Talk2Action has a US understandable explanation of what has been going on with a Texas family/trust that took over this chain of bookstores. I’m guessing they took over SPCK to liquidate, over the past few years, employees have filed tribunals, shops have closed, a manager committed suicide and finally last week Dave Walker of The Cartoon Blog received a threat of a SLAPP from the Brewer family. Walker is not able to afford to fight a SLAPP and took down 75 posts Big mistake on the part of the Texas family. Dave Walker is a gentle, none controversial fellow and did not deserve this treatment.
Bloggers have rallied, on both sides of the Atlantic, many who have never been in a SPCK bookstore have begun digging as the Brewsters (Mark Brewer is a Texas lawyer) attempt to file for liquidation in a Houston court.
It is a facinating look at either good intentions badly managed, or more likely as Richard states a Texas family trying to impose their values on the UK. The Brewers attempt to file in a Houston court is not going well.
The Ministry of Truth has most of the court documents and several post explaining the law and the reasons why the Brewers actions will probably be rejected by a US court. It has the information on the debt the Texans have to racked up, a bit more on who this family is.
MetaCatholic has picked it up and points to ASingleblog which is also providing information and is operating anonymously so they will less likely get to be SLAPPED.
The Wardman Wire has also been putting up several breaking information posts on this story.
The Houston Press and The Church Times have also been untangling this odd tale.
Even ABSO Jesus gets in on the blog burst. 40 blogs and counting at The Wardman Wire, he is trouble adding blogs as the blog burst grows.
Good set of link roundups at St. Aidan to Abbey Manor
St. Stephen the Great Charitable Trust (the video supports Richard Bartholomews observations)
