Consumer alert -Listeria monocytogenes

B.C. hospitals and carehomes are checking their inventories of sliced meats after at least two cases of listeriosis were identified in patients in B.C.

One patient in Fort St. John and another in Prince George were being treated for the same strain of the bacterial infection identified in the nationwide recall of Maple Leaf Foods meat products.

Listeriosis can be caused by eating contaminated food. A woman from Hamilton, Ont., has died in the outbreak, and officials are investigating whether another four other deaths are linked to it.

The Public Health Agency of Canada said there are 17 confirmed cases of listeriosis nationwide, including 13 in Ontario, two in B.C., one in Saskatchewan and one in Quebec

Symptoms

Symptoms of listeriosis are often flu-like and can include nausea, vomiting, cramps, diarrhea, high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, constipation and persistent fever. In rare cases, it can be fatal.

Symptoms usually appear within two to 30 days, but it can take up to 90 days to get sick after you’ve eaten contaminated food.

Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.

Listeriosis is treatable using antibiotics. If you suspect that you are experiencing legitimate symptoms of listeriosis, the Public Health Agency of Canada urges you to contact your health care provider immediately.

Update: Maple Leaf foods has pulled over 200 products from the 97B plant. The list of all meats under several brand names can be found at the Canadian Food Inspection site.

The Maple Leaf food deaths are tragic but what do you expect because the public doesn’t care until it is too late. Circa 1993 the Canadian government closed down an agency which investigates this type of concern. Mike Harri wanted the industry to regulate itself , an honour system so to speak. When it comes to honour think ENRON, Conrad Black ABCP plus many others. The only thing that protects the public safety is the DETERENT value of the LAW. If you put a few people in jail for violating federal laws and endangering the public safety I can guarantee you that lines will be kept clean and sanitized, but if you don’t then people die. I know this full well (see http://www.cancerfraudbadbiotech.com) because I am a victim of government propaganda and Biotechnology (food science is biotech) and the Center of Excellence scheme, to have millionaires walking the hall of academia. I have letters from Mike Harris (whom the now federal health minister, Tony Clement used to work for) Alan Rock, Sheila Copps, Bob Rae plus others, and even though a former US Surgeon General regretted my treatment that cancer research was suppressed to cover up fraud and other noted scholars consider the research of phenomenal value to mankind these noted Canadians did nothing to expose the fraud and cover up. Indeed they may have even helped cover up more. Look at the seguence, Tainted Blood , Mad Cow infection, bad Flu vacines, Hemasol ,lost cancer pathology reports , faked criminal pathology sending innocent people to jail, Exploding Propane centers, and now contaminated meat,where are the regulators enforcing the law and standards. From my experience they are protecting the wrongdoers not protecting the public health and safety.
