Parliament is not in crisis, it is in a rare and unusual situation but there are choices for the PM, his party and the opposition.  Harper is responsible for his mistakes, passing the buck only ads to the confusion and anger. He made his mistakes, miscalculated, misjudged.  He owns them and other-blaming isn’t going to change that.
The final decision will come from the Governor General. Parliament is toxic,  tempers hot, and as the battle for public opinion heats up it is clear many Canadians do not understand how their parliament works. Ads and talking points using coup, deal with the devil, back door, back room and other demonizing harms us all. The messages become toxic, divisive and unhealthy. Garbage in, garbage out.

The Prime Minister is likely to ask to prorogue, perhaps as early as today.

He will have the support of the Federal Cabinet before he goes to the GG. It will be her decision. Write Rideau Hall. Here is an idea of what to say if you have like me chosen the lesser of the two evils. Coldacid:

Her Excellency
the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D.
Governor General of Canada

Excellency,

I support the Liberal-NDP coalition and ask that Parliament not be prorogued. At a time when the confidence of the House of Commons in the government is in question, proroguing Parliament at the request of the Prime Minister would be interfering with the proper operations of Parliament and only serve to hinder the Canadian democratic process.

Your Excellency realizes the significance and precedent setting nature of this current affair of the government, and Your Excellency must also know that the will of the people of Canada is behind the proposed coalition as forwarded to you by the heads of opposition. As it is in our interest to allow the House of Commons to display their confidence, or lack thereof, in the current ministry, I humbly beseech Your Excellency to refuse any advice from the Prime Minister to prorogue or otherwise disrupt the current affair.

Again, I plead that Parliament not be prorogued, and that this affair plays out as it will.

Your servant,

Canada is facing a crisis, the same crisis the rest of the world is facing, economic hard times, recession, loss and perhaps depression. As the stand off in the House continues, the battle for public support is creating a toxic atmosphere and division across the country. There is a creative option for an election call from Impolitical.

Can you imagine the advantage the opposition coalition would have in such an election? First, they could scour the results of the last one, cherry-pick the ridings in which the Con barely eked out a win, and put extra effort into those ridings. But, of course, that’s not the best part.

If this coalition was serious, it could simply do the following: take each riding in which a Conservative was the victor, note whoever from a coalition party came in second, nominate that person for that riding and withdraw everyone else. Simple, no?

That would, of course, require genuine co-operation on the part of the coalition parties to accept that whoever among the coalition candidates got the most votes in each riding in the last election deserves to be the unopposed nominee in this one. It might force a few people to swallow their pride for the good of the coalition, but can you imagine the devastation as Conservatives go down in flames since the “Left” is no longer stupidly splitting their vote, letting the Cons sneak up the middle? Would someone like to run the numbers and see what the results would be based on the figures from the last election?

We who believe in prayer can pray for MP’s their assistants and civil servants.
