Will of the arch-traditionalist Lefebvrite Richard Williamson recant ? The Vatican and Pope Benedict XVI have received a lot of backlash for allowing for priests with a breakaway sect (after Vatican II). The Vatican says the Pope was unaware Williamson, enamoured with German Ernst Zundel who lived in Canada from 1958 to 2000 and deported back to Germany where he received a five year conviction believes “Nazi gas chambers didn’t exist and no more than 300,000 Jews died in concentration camps.”
If the Pope is that isolated from advisers and council he was actually unaware, calls for his resignation from governments and Catholics do not go against church law. A Pope may step down from his office after the age of 80. Pope Benedict XVI is 81. It appears the lack of Vatican communication and the Pope’s claim has caught the Roman Catholic Church unprepared for the public backlash. The Vatican:
“Bishop Williamson, in order to be admitted to the episcopal [bishop] functions of the Church, must in an absolutely unequivocal and public way distance himself from his positions regarding the Shoah,” the statement said, using the Hebrew word for the Holocaust.
