This is depressing. Not only depressing, Reed’s movement within government is something to keep an eye on. Anyone who knows Focus on the Family, knows this self-serving dominionist organization has an agenda which is not good for the rest of us.
In all good conscience I have a problem with any Christian aligned with this organization and promoting anyone who willingly aligns themselves and is promoted within and by Fotf bears close watch.
Bah.

You shouldn’t be surprised. Look at Harper ….

I was CM&A and I’m not a dominionist or a fundamentalist or a liar in the Focus on the Family way we’ve come to understand.
You are talking apples and oranges.
Most CM&A are moderate, middle of the road evangelicals – I honestly don’t know one who would give Focus the time of day.
That having been said, evangelicalism is a big tent and there are exceptions.
I think you are overestimating Mr. Harper’s penchent toward fundamentalist faith – what you may be tuned into his his poltically acumen to feed whomever will vote for him.
I think one needs to pay close attention not so much to the church that Harper attends as to who his advisors are connected to.
The Beaver did an excellent expose of this a couple of years ago, and it draws lines between Harper, his advisors, and some of the worst elements of extremist political christianity. (I’m somewhat loathe to think of FOTF as christian in any real sense – they seem to have long since forgotten the message of the scripture and replaced it with an undying need for political power)
Darrel Reid is simply a textbook example of the kind of extremism that gives any faith a bad name. If anything, Harper’s willingness to elevate Reid is a good indication that the extremist roots of the old Reform party are still very much in control of the CPoC.
MsG:
Thank you.
Point well made and taken.
The Crystal Gaze posts are also a solid primer about Reform/Alliance members who embrace far more than social conservatism.
Dan Gilgoff’s The Jesus Machine as well as Marci McDonald’s Walrus article clearly lay out why Focus on the Family is a political organization and why it needs to be watched closely in countries it has branched out into.
Bloggers have down a good job of connecting the Canadian dots.
As far as I know Canadians have not yet elected anyone who has willfully and proudly worked with Fotf – that could change.
No informed Christian in good conscience can align themselves with this group and it’s tactics.
I’m not loath to voice my opinion Fotf is not a Christian organization.
Meantime I’m left wondering who Reed is going to slip into the back door in Ottawa.
