We Must Do Something – Calgary church concert draws 3000

Canadian singers Steve Bell and Carolyn Arends held a concert in Calgary Wednesday night – and raised over 100 thousand dollars for Haiti relief.

Christianity Today blog mentioned the benefit held at Centre Street Church.

The Canadian government is matching the amount raised, the money is being given to Samaritans Purse.

Bell looked at the history of Haiti on his blog in a post called Debt, Dictatorship and Disaster and offered practical ways Canadians can help.

Like so many Christians, I was stunned  by Pat Robertson’s  suggestion that Haiti’s current woes issue from  a curse following some ancient “pact with the devil” in the days of Haiti’s founding (a statement for which Mr. Robertson received a sound Shakespeareanesque thumping from CBC’s Rex Murphy  – see HERE.)

Bell  offers fans a video of his song, ‘This Fast I Give’ in his post.

3000 people showed up at the church for the concert Wednesday night.

Arend fans can listen to one of her songs for free, ‘Nothing Can Separate’ off her blog. It was written a year ago - interesting first verse:

Somewhere there’s a mother waking up
To news in the night that she cannot bear
And somewhere the whole earth is quaking
Making dust of the city that was standing there

About Bene Diction

Have courage for the great sorrows, And patience for the small ones. And when you have laboriously accomplished your tasks, go to sleep in peace. God is awake.

One Response to We Must Do Something – Calgary church concert draws 3000

  1. Therese says:

It’s so hard to fathom the cruel injustices that have marked mankind’s history since Day 1 – hard to get one’s mind around it at times, and yet the lesson of Nazi Germany, a “modern” industrialized nation, makes me think we can’t afford to think these kinds of things can never happen again. But it strikes me as ironic that the people, ie, European, caucasians, who once oppressed and squeezed Haiti for every ounce of her blood and are the cause of most of the suffering there, are now rushing to her aid – is it possible that we are seeing a silver lining in this earthquake, in that it has drawn world attention and sympathy to her plight, and do we dare hope that a better day may be dawning for this beleaguered little country?
