I went by a newsstand during my lunch today and picked up the National Enquirer, with their two page story which alleges “TV EVANGELIST BENNY HINN CAUGHT IN TORRID AFFAIR” with fellow TV evangelist Paula White. You’ll remember that Bene D first mentioned the rumour story in his post yesterday.
Like Bene, I am not a habitual reader of tabloids due to the nature of their reporting. But even a stopped clock can be right twice a day, and I think that a little analysis of the story can be helpful in deciding whether there is something valid happening, or whether things are being blown out of proportion. In a week where a media frenzy needed to be undone, we need to be cautious while we have our eyes open.
As Aimee Semple McPherson and Kenneth Ormiston could have told you, the media has a long history of trying to cite sexual misconduct by ministers.
I am thinking that the Enquirer may have learned of this late in their production cucle, as the story is only promoted in a small box at the bottom of the front page, with a photo of “Benny Hinn”: “TV PREACHER CAUGHT WITH MISTRESS–she’s an evangelist too!”
If we turn to the actual story–”TV EVANGELIST BENNY HINN CAUGHT IN TORRID AFFAIR!”–near the middle of the tabloid, we see two photos of Hinn and White, where they are holding hands. One shows them from the back and the other from the front. The photo is captioned: “Rome Italy July 13, 2010 Benny Hinn and Paula Hinn hold hands as they leave Rome’s Hotel Hassler during their romantic getaway.”
Something that is odd about the photos as they were printed in my copy. The photo showing a front view of the pair has the lady with blonde hair. However, in the rear view of the pair, the lady seems to have white hair. Is that due to the shadows in the second, from the rear shot? Perhaps a photography expert can help…
What struck me about the story is how much it resembles, in some ways, the Toronto Star story, reporting on background such as details of Hinn and White’s ministries, the Grassley probe, and how Hinn is getting a divorce from his wife, which is not final yet.
All the Enquirer sources are anonymous, which is never a good sign.
One tabloid trick that the Enquirer uses are quoting “insiders” who do a colour commentary on what is going on. This could easily be the Enquirer editors themselves.
The “insider”, by the way, says that Hinn has been a “mentor and father figure” to White. I’ll return to this later.
Given the splash and emphasis the National Enquirer is giving to the story, the details of the “juicy parts” are thin.
Here they are, from the story:
“….We caught the couple walking hand-in hand out of the Hotel Hassler, where Pastor Hinn was booked into the preidential suite under a false name, on July 13….
….
….Hinn and White spent three nights at the ritzy Rome hotel, where Hinn chceked in as David Salomon.

(and in the next to last paragraph)
….While in Rome recently, Hinn was not wearing his wedding ring. One observer said he “acted affectionately” toward White, taking her hand as they strolled through thye streets. Hinn “seemed very happy, at one point wearing a big grin as he left the hotel” where he and White were staying, the eyewitness added….
Question: I know that every time I have stayed in a hotel, especially post 9-11, I have had to provide photo ID such as a passport. Isn’t it now impossible to follow the lead of old black-and-white gangster movies and sign in under a fake name?
And does the Enquirer know that Hinn usually wore a wedding ring?
You could look at this story two ways.
We know about Hinn’s long history of bad theology, abberant stewardship of finances and such. We could guess that he has the sort of character that could lead to an extramarital affair.
It certainly does look suspicious to stay with another woman in your hotel when you are still married, and walk around holding hands with her.
But let’s look at the other point of view. As Hinn is a “mentor” of White’s, as the Enquirer admits, it would certainly be the case that Hinn and White are friends.
Hinn is now 57, and comes from a middle eastern heritage. It would perhaps be natural for him, as a somewhat old fashioned person, to hold hands with close female friends and to smilingly enjoy their company. Although Billy Graham reportedly has a rule that he is never alone with a female that isn’t his wife, is it fair to assume that if Hinn doesn’t observe the rule that something is amiss?
From what I understand, from various documetaries, Hinn usually travels with an affair-complicating entourage. The Enquirer doesn’t know this, or won’t report it.
I’m also wondering about the “eyewitness” cited late in the story. I am thinking that he is the paparazzi who took the two “smoking gun” photos. Surely a major potential terrorist target such as Rome wouldn’t have hotels that allow people to sign in as “Mr. Fake Name.” My guess is that Mr. Photographer might recognize Hinn, observed what happened in public areas on the hotel, took a couple pictures and sent them to the National Enquirer, whose editors then figured out that the mystery lady was Paula White.
Am I taking Hinn’s side? No, and I would say that given Hinn’s past, you could very well reasonably assume that something fishy is going on between the pair. He ceratinly has a backstory. But, the Biblical advice to “Test all things. Hold on to what is good” should apply to the National Enquirer if it applies to any paper, right?
Let’s see what regular papers do, and how the story plays out.
Whatever happens, though, appearances can take a toll on a person’s reputation, which reminds me of the last time that I know that I bought the National Enquirer.
Back in 1987, U.S. Senator Gary Hart was the frontrunner to be the next Democratic nominee for president. That year, the National Enquirer ran a story quoting Rice as saying “Gary Hart Asked Me to Marry Him” with a picture of Rice cuddling with Hart on the cover. The resulting scandal torpedoed his efforts to become president.
Will the photos of Hinn holding hands with White–assuming no photoshopping and correct identification–topple Hinn? Will the National Enquirer topple Hinn? Who knows…

As you may be aware, the National Enquirer recently released a dishonest and misleading article which falsely characterized my friendship with Paula White. The publication, which is known for its bias against religious figures, misleads readers regarding the ministerial friendship I have had with Paula White for over 20 years.
As you know, my wife, Suzanne, filed for divorce at the beginning of this year. If it were not for the comfort of the precious Holy Spirit and the Word of God to give me encouragement throughout this process, I cannot imagine how I could have survived the past five months. Throughout this season, your love and prayers have helped strengthen me to continue ministering around the world. Were it not for your faithfulness and the presence of my wonderful Lord Jesus, the loneliness of carrying this burden by myself would have been unbearable.
In late May of this year, Paula White came to tape a This Is Your Day broadcast with me. Although I had not seen her for years, she was an encouragement to me and shared helpful advice out of her own painful experience. As a result, I will not deny that the friendship has strengthened, and, while it has remained morally pure at all times, I have enjoyed the company of someone who has also gone through the trauma of a painful and public divorce.
But most of you know me personally and know that I have faithfully preached the Gospel for over 35 years. I have never failed my marriage vows and would never dishonor the precious name of Jesus, whom I adore with all my being…and I never will! As I have often said, I would rather die than bring dishonor to His name.
And so I am writing to tell you today that I forcefully, categorically, and absolutely renounce the lies that have been spread about me and want to set the record straight with you. There is nothing inappropriate or morally improper about my friendship with Paula White.
There has been no immorality whatsoever!
The article also indicated that on a recent trip to Italy we met secretly and stayed together. This could not be further from the truth and is absolutely false! The truth is that we traveled independently to the region for respective ministry duties. I was invited by Vatican officials to visit the Vatican to discuss future ministry opportunities there. Paula was likewise invited to have meetings in the region, and, although we spent time together, we were never alone and were in the constant company of staff and family members.
That notwithstanding, I have become increasingly aware that the optics of this friendship have caused others to draw conclusions that are incomplete and unfounded. And because of my preeminent priority to my ministry and calling, Paula and I have concluded that we should avoid the appearance that our friendship is biblically impure or violates Scripture in any way. Paula and I also recognize that being seen in such settings is unwise, and we have independently determined that we will have no further social relationship until such time as my divorce has concluded and only if we feel direction from the Lord to do so.
I am using this season to seek the Lord and His Word as my Counselor and Guide as my family and I recover from the pain and disappointment of the loss of my marriage of over 30 years. My commitment to preaching the Gospel, as I have done for over 35 years, has only intensified through this experience; and the precious Lord Jesus I adore is the true love of my life and my unfailing companion for all eternity.
Thank you for your prayers, your love, and all your support for me and my family. You are precious to me and I will not fail you; but most of all I will never fail the wonderful Lord Jesus who is life and breath to me.

True, We are to earnestly contend for the faith, expose, rebuke etc…. They have publicly for spoke false prophecy’s in the name of the LORD, false teaching about Jesus and so forth. They have truly have brought open shame to God, God’s word and Jesus Christ. Having said that, since they have done all this publicly, then we are to expose and rebuke them sharply, publicly. We are commanded to defend the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They have brought open shame to the gospel. Under the circumstance, holding hands in public is wrong.

The are plenty of confirmed facts about Benny that can be talked about. For example Benny’s private jet. A Gulfstream G4SP worth $36 million. If he needs two million dollars, sell his jet.
By the dictionary definition, Wally is gossiping on details that are not confirmed to be true. Wally and a few others on this blog have met that definition, by the factual statements they have made.
The Bible is clear that gossiping is wrong. In God’s eyes, gossiping and sexual sin are the same.
First of all I want to say to those who are broken by the discovery that men and women that they looked up to are frauds, I understand your pain I have been there. You have to understand that there are more corrupt leaders in the Church and they will not be discovered in the grand fashion of a Benny Hinn. They call the shots in all denominations. You are in the days of the apostate church. The exposure of these fallen pulpit stars are great in my eyes. All of this is not mere coincidence these people were placed and are placed in power by major players in the Church who are not in the lime light. They also have pawns who attend church and are administrators and moderators in Christian forums. They also have pawns[plants] who are satanists who post on forums and blogs these do get paid in one way or another. Jesus warned us about them as did the authors of the New Testament. And David Wilkerson warned the body of Christ recently; ” if the foundations be broken what can the Righteous do?” That is a quote from Psalms 11. The only answer we have is in v.6 of Ps. 11 “Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup.” I am waiting for the Lords judgment. God didn’t get blind and deaf all of a sudden. He still reigns on high. Verse 6 in not a figure of speech, this will happen. When something gets so corrupt it has to be purged . Time will tell if I am correct in my assessment. Those in the very top are guilty by their silence. And God does require more from them then He does from His scattered Sheep. Use this time to get to know the Lord more intimately. There is a time when the meek will inherit the earth, just as Jesus promised. Perhaps the time will come shortly after verse 6 of Psalms 11. Please do a search in your concordance on the ‘meek inheriting the earth’ in the book of Psalms and try to figure out for yourselves with the Lord’s assistance as to what is the time line we are in currently.

Your point is well taken. I understand what you are saying. However, Benny has lied before and deceived so many people, including myself, why should we believe anything he says. I will agree that we must be careful in what saying and writing. The world and christian are reading our comment and we must not bring open shame to the LORD. We must honor the LORD. Benny Hinn and Paula White sin will find them out and will be exposed in due time. I do not know if they had an affair and will not say they did, I am saying shame on them for what they have done to bring open shame to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We must bring Glorify to the LORD !!!!!

Wally, I want to share this with you. I have been a little preoccupied with this Benny Hinn thing since Suzanne filed for divorce. My 9 year old have been listening to me, she has been hearing everything I have been saying to my friend Deb and my husband. When all this broke out almost 2 weeks ago, we were on our way to the fair. I went into the store to get a National Enquirer, my 9 year old, said; ha! ha! ha! ha! Benny Hinn is going down. When I got to the car my husband told me what she had said and that I need to be careful what we say and how I am saying it around the kids. We explained to her what was going on and that a lot of people are going to come down with them when they fall and that we need to pray for the LORD to bring them to repentance as well. My point is this that people are watching, reading and listening to everthing that we are doing. I do agree with you Wally. He needs to be stopped and he needs be silenced. He is not my brother and she is not my sister. I do not believe a word they says. They both are false prophets and a false teachers and have brought open shame to the gospel,. However, we as true believers need to make sure that we are bringing Glory and honor to the LORD in what we write and say and that we are not bring open shame as well. I am not saying you are but we need to present the truth as we know it and as the evidence comes in. I do believe deep down that they are guilty, yes I do.
I could stil be following this man and woman but by God’s grace and mercy, he opened my eyes to the truth. I do pray that the LORD exposes this wide open and their ministries fall. Having said that, I am more concerned that all those who follow these two, will fall as well. I am praying that God will through all this open more eyes and that some can and will be spared. Brethren, I think we should be careful what we say and write about Benny and Paula. Who is he that condemns? or who can lay anything to the charge of God’s elect(Romans 8:33-34). Where is the brotherly love in the body of christ? Are we not suppose to be praying for this ones that are standing out in the name of our God? Is there no sympathy or concern for what Benny is going through(divorce issue)?
Brethren how can we prove our love for Jesus if we can not stand by our fellow kingdom citizen in hard times? It’s not the best for us to create an occassion for unbelievers to mock our faith by castigating our ministers .
I beg everyone in the name of the Lord to be mindful of the comments they are posting. I’m African, not a member of Benny nor Paula’s ministry but I will continue to esteem, support and pray for them until the will of God be perfected in their lifes.
My message to Benny and Paula is that you don’t have to stop working together because the public are suspecting you, so long as you both keep clean conscience before God. God will see you through and Satan will be put to shame in the end.

OTY, Benny Hinn is going through a divorce, yes. He has yet to do the biblical thing and go to his wife and try to reconcile this marriage. He moved out of the house, not her. If you read the KJV focus on the phrase; The Wicked[which is a title of a group of people] in the book of Psalms. Its an eye opener, to me at least. We have all fallen short of the glory of God and he who is without sin let them cast the first stone. I know Suzanne and she is a very wonderful person a women of prayer and integrity. I also had been married to a preacher who tried to justify his affair by making me look bad, I kept my mouth shut also to protect the ministry and my children. I am not suggesting Benny had affair that is between him and God, but remember when you point your finger at someone there are four more pointing at yourself. Most of all, I find alot of preachers that are married and neglect their families and their wives, the promise they make to love their wife as Christ loved the church to lay his very life down, doesn’t exist. They are married to their ministries and their families suffer from it. Being married to a minister and him married to his ministry was like dealing with another women only it being his ministry all my life. I have been involved in every kind of church out there from Denominational to Non Denominational to Penecostal and I find them all flawed, inasmuch that I hear a bunch of clanging cymbals not much love anywhere and a lot of judgement. The one thing God commands is to love one another, and I just don’t see any of that anywhere.
If Westerners come to India, they will surely reach the conclusion that almost all Indians are gay. Why do I say this? Go to any street or college campus or school. You will see boys and girls who hold each other’s hand in public. Young men, young women walk hand in hand. Young women walk with their hands at each other’s hips!
But those who know India will think otherwise. Holding hands or walking together with hands on each other’s shoulder is not considered as a sign of sexual or romantic intimacy. It’s just a sign of friendship.
The Bible says, “Greet each other with a holy kiss.” Does it mean that men should kiss only men and women should kiss only women? No! That’s why it is said “holy kiss.” You may say that its a “cultural” command – just for the residents of ancient Near East. Well, Benny Hinn is from the Middle East and the “cultural” commands in the Bible certainly applies to him, if not for Paula!
Let’s not make too much out of their holding hands. When a large percentage of “born-again” Christians are nothing more than “porn-again” Christians, we need to go slow on this couple who just held hands – yes, hands!
I tend to think you have a good point Phillip. Just from my own obsevation. I did some work related to some studies I was taking at a church, and most of the people were from India. They were very considerate and kind natured to me. So much, that I will never forget them. I’m trying to keep an open mind, because of that. I saw so many gentle people in that church.

This is in all likely hood my last post. I will if the Lord leads find others means[blogs?] to share. I have been through an ugly divorce through no fault of my own. It leaves you feeling ugly, undesirable, and lonely. The natural thing to do is to identify with a person who has gone through a similar experience. It also helps ego if someone pays the least bit of attention to you so you seek that confirmation that you are all right. Benny Hinn is human. If he has done something wrong let God take care of it. That’s who is supposed to judge him not us.
@Grace With all due respect to you, HE IS A MARRIED MAN. You were faultless but Benny Hinn is not faultless, he admits now that he neglected his wife and 4 children for years. However, We are to judge with in the church by the written Word of God not our own standards but God’s. We are not to judge by appearance but by righteous judgement. We shall know the tree it by their fruits. A corrupt tree can not bear good fruit and good tree can not bear corrupt fruit. I hardly call this a good fruit, matter fact is smell rotten to me. No one would ever believe that a man and woman seen leaving a hotel together . . . . holding hands. . . . would only be ‘friends.’ It insults one’s intelligence to even suggest that the two of them are only friends.
There was no reason for her to be there if, as PASTOR Benny suggests, she were there only to donate money. BS!
He, like most other televangelists, is full of crap and has been caught in an affair, which is not surprising to most of the world. What is surprising is that he is dumb enough to think he would not be caught or that the world would actually believe his story that Paula and he are ‘only friends!’

It is like when Benny Hinn rebuked Todd Bentley on the Lakeland revival (after the fact of course) I will say that Benny nailed it scripturallly but Benny Hinn was the pot calling the kettle black, that is being a hyprocrite. The scriptures are clear as to why we are to judge righteously by the word of God within the church, not by appreance but righteous judgement. What is God speaking through all this if we look at it as a parable? A mouthful, that’s for sure…DIVORCE and the reasons why…Benny is in process of being divorced, Paula has recently been divorced. They went to Rome to be together, whether between the sheets or not, and they have chosen the Vatican to cling to for defense, in an effort to save face and fortune. I think it speaks volumes too, that even a lot of what is considered by the world to be great art in the Vatican’s possession is nothing but well-painted pornography to a Holy God, which these two ‘holy ones’ speak of proudly supporting. He is exposing the whoredoms of the false church, and He is divorcing her, His ‘wife’, because of unfaithfulness, or maybe she is divorcing Him by her own actions. She is turning to even more spiritual harlotry to survive by ‘holding hands’ with the mother of harlots. The situation also speaks that there is ‘merger’ going on here on more than one level with the potential merging of these two ministries – worldliness, carnality, corporate business acumen – in bed with Babylon – a version of Christianity that is big business – and ecumenicalism, leading to the merger/uniting of all religions in a false and temporary peace and harmony (as if everyone with conflicting beliefs could be right! only in a world of “double-think”). This whole business looks like an intertwined rattlesnake’s nest, shouting out it’s own warning if we will have ears to hear.
It looks to me that consciences are being seared, those who continue to lead or follow these whoring ministries even after they have been exposed as such will not be ready for His coming. His bride is pure and virginal.
We live in the day of deception. Pictures can and will continue to be very deceitful, how? well you can actually take 2 pictures and combine them . you can also alter them. My brother is a photographer and does this altering for many reasons, for sports photos when shooting children’s sports events. If you look at Benny Hinn in the picture of him “holding hands” with paula white you will see his hair is not even parted on the correct side. if you look even closer, it looks almost like him but it can even be a double. Do you know how many doubles there are for actors and actresses? look very closely at this picture. When you look at the shape of his hand touching paulas, it is distorted. it almost looks correct but look really good. YOU can do anything with pictures now including but not limited to combining them.

If the pictures were doctored, all Benny and Paula had to say was that they were never in Rome holding hands together – they have never denied the photos, only the conclusions that people were coming to.

You just did exactly what Jesus forbids in Matt 7 hypocritical judgement. I would also suggest that you pray for the LORD to open your eyes and your heart to the true gospel and give you understanding of his word.

In the book of John 7:53-8:11, textual scholars have determined that these verses were added to the NT around the 15th century. When the earliest manuscripts were examined they were not in them. They also determined that someone who did not understand Judaism may have added these verses. Today one may find these verse omitted in some NT.
However, just the same we are to love the sinner, but hate the sin. Looks as if it’s more important for each of us to focus on our own shortcomings rather than others. A lesson I’m still trying to learn. Anyway, some food for thought.
This is not an arrow aimed to find fault with anyone. Just something I’ve observed.
Benny and Paula are humans. Nothing wrong with a friendship. But they are hiding and lying and constantly twist the word for personal profit. Why can’t they just admit their sins, stop selling the gospel, and live humbly. That’s God’s will for all our lives. Instead, they live on platforms and are idolized. Problem with ministers is that they are not vulnerable.

If what the picture is saying is true, it not strange, it can be you or me eg. Peter who lived, eat and studied at the feet of Jesus could deny him three time, then why taking it as if God fell down from heaven. The best thing i think is pray that we finish the race and be able to count our course before the Almighty God.
First of all…Benny Hinn forgot the verse in the Bible that says a man is not to counsel a woman and a woman is not to counsel a man. Second of all,,,,no husband is to walk hand in hand,,,,,in public views holding the hand of a woman that’s not his wife, especially a woman wearing shorts. No wife is to accept this and no husband would definitely not accept such behavior. Second of all….if his visit was so innocent, why check in under a false name ?
Let’s face it,,,,He should simply accept the plain and simple fact that he has been caught,,and it was so stupid to be caught walking hand in hand with another woman coming out of a hotel. No matter if it was innocent or not,,,appearance is always the first impression to believe.
it is really something to be careful about all ministers of gospel. john 8.44. for a preacher like him it is and awful end . preaching is easy not obeying the commandments John 14;21&23 . i am sure that he is aware of Mathew 5: 27-32. we all common believers have to be strong in our faith , then no one can deceive us .
