I went by a newsstand during my lunch today and picked up the National Enquirer, with their two page story which alleges “TV EVANGELIST BENNY HINN CAUGHT IN TORRID AFFAIR” with fellow TV evangelist Paula White. You’ll remember that Bene D first mentioned the rumour story in his post yesterday.
Like Bene, I am not a habitual reader of tabloids due to the nature of their reporting. But even a stopped clock can be right twice a day, and I think that a little analysis of the story can be helpful in deciding whether there is something valid happening, or whether things are being blown out of proportion. In a week where a media frenzy needed to be undone, we need to be cautious while we have our eyes open.
As Aimee Semple McPherson and Kenneth Ormiston could have told you, the media has a long history of trying to cite sexual misconduct by ministers.
I am thinking that the Enquirer may have learned of this late in their production cucle, as the story is only promoted in a small box at the bottom of the front page, with a photo of “Benny Hinn”: “TV PREACHER CAUGHT WITH MISTRESS–she’s an evangelist too!”
If we turn to the actual story–”TV EVANGELIST BENNY HINN CAUGHT IN TORRID AFFAIR!”–near the middle of the tabloid, we see two photos of Hinn and White, where they are holding hands. One shows them from the back and the other from the front. The photo is captioned: “Rome Italy July 13, 2010 Benny Hinn and Paula Hinn hold hands as they leave Rome’s Hotel Hassler during their romantic getaway.”
Something that is odd about the photos as they were printed in my copy. The photo showing a front view of the pair has the lady with blonde hair. However, in the rear view of the pair, the lady seems to have white hair. Is that due to the shadows in the second, from the rear shot? Perhaps a photography expert can help…
What struck me about the story is how much it resembles, in some ways, the Toronto Star story, reporting on background such as details of Hinn and White’s ministries, the Grassley probe, and how Hinn is getting a divorce from his wife, which is not final yet.
All the Enquirer sources are anonymous, which is never a good sign.
One tabloid trick that the Enquirer uses are quoting “insiders” who do a colour commentary on what is going on. This could easily be the Enquirer editors themselves.
The “insider”, by the way, says that Hinn has been a “mentor and father figure” to White. I’ll return to this later.
Given the splash and emphasis the National Enquirer is giving to the story, the details of the “juicy parts” are thin.
Here they are, from the story:
“….We caught the couple walking hand-in hand out of the Hotel Hassler, where Pastor Hinn was booked into the preidential suite under a false name, on July 13….
….
….Hinn and White spent three nights at the ritzy Rome hotel, where Hinn chceked in as David Salomon.

(and in the next to last paragraph)
….While in Rome recently, Hinn was not wearing his wedding ring. One observer said he “acted affectionately” toward White, taking her hand as they strolled through thye streets. Hinn “seemed very happy, at one point wearing a big grin as he left the hotel” where he and White were staying, the eyewitness added….
Question: I know that every time I have stayed in a hotel, especially post 9-11, I have had to provide photo ID such as a passport. Isn’t it now impossible to follow the lead of old black-and-white gangster movies and sign in under a fake name?
And does the Enquirer know that Hinn usually wore a wedding ring?
You could look at this story two ways.
We know about Hinn’s long history of bad theology, abberant stewardship of finances and such. We could guess that he has the sort of character that could lead to an extramarital affair.
It certainly does look suspicious to stay with another woman in your hotel when you are still married, and walk around holding hands with her.
But let’s look at the other point of view. As Hinn is a “mentor” of White’s, as the Enquirer admits, it would certainly be the case that Hinn and White are friends.
Hinn is now 57, and comes from a middle eastern heritage. It would perhaps be natural for him, as a somewhat old fashioned person, to hold hands with close female friends and to smilingly enjoy their company. Although Billy Graham reportedly has a rule that he is never alone with a female that isn’t his wife, is it fair to assume that if Hinn doesn’t observe the rule that something is amiss?
From what I understand, from various documetaries, Hinn usually travels with an affair-complicating entourage. The Enquirer doesn’t know this, or won’t report it.
I’m also wondering about the “eyewitness” cited late in the story. I am thinking that he is the paparazzi who took the two “smoking gun” photos. Surely a major potential terrorist target such as Rome wouldn’t have hotels that allow people to sign in as “Mr. Fake Name.” My guess is that Mr. Photographer might recognize Hinn, observed what happened in public areas on the hotel, took a couple pictures and sent them to the National Enquirer, whose editors then figured out that the mystery lady was Paula White.
Am I taking Hinn’s side? No, and I would say that given Hinn’s past, you could very well reasonably assume that something fishy is going on between the pair. He ceratinly has a backstory. But, the Biblical advice to “Test all things. Hold on to what is good” should apply to the National Enquirer if it applies to any paper, right?
Let’s see what regular papers do, and how the story plays out.
Whatever happens, though, appearances can take a toll on a person’s reputation, which reminds me of the last time that I know that I bought the National Enquirer.
Back in 1987, U.S. Senator Gary Hart was the frontrunner to be the next Democratic nominee for president. That year, the National Enquirer ran a story quoting Rice as saying “Gary Hart Asked Me to Marry Him” with a picture of Rice cuddling with Hart on the cover. The resulting scandal torpedoed his efforts to become president.
Will the photos of Hinn holding hands with White–assuming no photoshopping and correct identification–topple Hinn? Will the National Enquirer topple Hinn? Who knows…

As you may be aware, the National Enquirer recently released a dishonest and misleading article which falsely characterized my friendship with Paula White. The publication, which is known for its bias against religious figures, misleads readers regarding the ministerial friendship I have had with Paula White for over 20 years.
As you know, my wife, Suzanne, filed for divorce at the beginning of this year. If it were not for the comfort of the precious Holy Spirit and the Word of God to give me encouragement throughout this process, I cannot imagine how I could have survived the past five months. Throughout this season, your love and prayers have helped strengthen me to continue ministering around the world. Were it not for your faithfulness and the presence of my wonderful Lord Jesus, the loneliness of carrying this burden by myself would have been unbearable.
In late May of this year, Paula White came to tape a This Is Your Day broadcast with me. Although I had not seen her for years, she was an encouragement to me and shared helpful advice out of her own painful experience. As a result, I will not deny that the friendship has strengthened, and, while it has remained morally pure at all times, I have enjoyed the company of someone who has also gone through the trauma of a painful and public divorce.
But most of you know me personally and know that I have faithfully preached the Gospel for over 35 years. I have never failed my marriage vows and would never dishonor the precious name of Jesus, whom I adore with all my being…and I never will! As I have often said, I would rather die than bring dishonor to His name.
And so I am writing to tell you today that I forcefully, categorically, and absolutely renounce the lies that have been spread about me and want to set the record straight with you. There is nothing inappropriate or morally improper about my friendship with Paula White.
There has been no immorality whatsoever!
The article also indicated that on a recent trip to Italy we met secretly and stayed together. This could not be further from the truth and is absolutely false! The truth is that we traveled independently to the region for respective ministry duties. I was invited by Vatican officials to visit the Vatican to discuss future ministry opportunities there. Paula was likewise invited to have meetings in the region, and, although we spent time together, we were never alone and were in the constant company of staff and family members.
That notwithstanding, I have become increasingly aware that the optics of this friendship have caused others to draw conclusions that are incomplete and unfounded. And because of my preeminent priority to my ministry and calling, Paula and I have concluded that we should avoid the appearance that our friendship is biblically impure or violates Scripture in any way. Paula and I also recognize that being seen in such settings is unwise, and we have independently determined that we will have no further social relationship until such time as my divorce has concluded and only if we feel direction from the Lord to do so.
I am using this season to seek the Lord and His Word as my Counselor and Guide as my family and I recover from the pain and disappointment of the loss of my marriage of over 30 years. My commitment to preaching the Gospel, as I have done for over 35 years, has only intensified through this experience; and the precious Lord Jesus I adore is the true love of my life and my unfailing companion for all eternity.
Thank you for your prayers, your love, and all your support for me and my family. You are precious to me and I will not fail you; but most of all I will never fail the wonderful Lord Jesus who is life and breath to me.

Anna your taking that scripture out of context. In context James is condeming men like Benny Hinn.
I’m going to presume something about Mr. Hinn. One reason is because my tolerance level is at it’s peak, when he continues to ask for large sums of money. Another reason, because of what I notice about his ministry and life style.
1. He has a lavish life style.
2. He either has a grand fringe benefit while on his tours, or makes a bundle of money.
3. I would venture to say his home life is quite lavish too. Because of the choices he
makes on where to live. The coastlines for one thing.
4. He will need a very expensive attorney to counteract Mrs. Hinn’s.
Just with the 4 presuppositions above, what can one conclude? As for me, he should cut back on his living expenses. I guess it’s too late to sell his property with a divorce pending. But, if he could sell some things, I wonder if he could come up with 2 million dollars easy. Then, he would have his 2 million dollars for his ministry.
Most people would learn to cut back spending if the money gets tight. Benny, well, he will just asks for more money and will claim that it’s for Jesus.
For all we know his salary alone could be in the seven figure range.
Bad news for deniers of an affair–The National Enquirer has been right far more often than it’s been wrong in recent years,ask John Edwards for starters. The positive from all this is that maybe this will finally be it for these two heretical hucksters. Then again,who am I kidding, Todd Bentley’s still out there.

Buddy McPeters on Paula White I saw her on a TV program or a YouTube clip and she was talking about how Christian women should look and act sexy. I don’t think they should try to look ugly or whatever but she’s sending out a lot of mixed signals in her message and very little of it is actually about God or Jesus or the Gospel. She has this “look at me” aplomb & then she tells women (and men) “it’s all about you” in so many words. Her recent claim along with Larry Huch that “Jesus is not the only begotten son of God” has caused a firestorm on the heresy watch websites. I can’t believe what these people “teach” and preach, and their so-called revelations and prophecies are beyond the realm of WEIRD! She & Benny & Huch are exactly that: WEIRD! WHEN are they gonna preach & teach the TRUTH? Or do they even know the TRUTH? I have my doubts

The Bible is very clear when it says we should not slander – talk about in a negative way. It is sad that Satan wins so many people who at first may be wanting to obey the Lord, but fall away because of the enticements of this world.
My own husband was a minister and a an executive in a large conservative/christian denomination – he had a woman on the west coast for 4 years and I never knew it. He is very wealthy now and I raised our 4 children, put them through college and I have a hard time buying food.
But…..their decisions and their failing the Lord is the Lord’s business. It makes us who are really faithful and trying to win others to Christ feel badly because the world is hating christians more and more, martyrs around the world and satan is just waiting for a christian to slip up so he can show a spot – lite on them. The reason? To turn people away from the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and eternal life.
We must pray – pray for ourselves that we too won’t fall into temptation and then pray for those who have fallen that damage against the name of Jesus won’t happen.
Jesus is coming soon…..let’s spend our time thinking of things that are pleasing to the Lord and walking very closely to Him.

The word slander addresses verbal issues:
“defamation in some transient form, as by spoken words, gestures, etc”
I believe you meant libel – “written.”
Look closely at the Hinn/White statements and what isn’t being denied.
Having said that, I am going to respectfully disagree with you. Once anyone puts themself into a public role – (ie: use of public airwaves, receiving of charity status) – their decisions do affect the rest of us.
Hinn and White are manipulative predators, they willfully target others financially in God’s name. They seek celebrity and attention structually with their organizations.
They place religious yokes on others with the deviancy they preach.
Hinn and White have not shown themselves over years of ministry to be faithful to orthodoxy or fit to teach and preach. It didn’t have to be that way, blame Satan all you want, at the end of the day their choices have had profound effects on others. Those choices filtered all the way to a US senate committee. Why choose co-dependent thinking about a televangelist?
You acknowledge that, the Lord did not ask us to park our brains when it comes to media ministries, He asks us to be wise, prudent, careful and to aid those who have been caught by the choices and behavior of people who set themselves up in a public role.
Whether Jesus comes soon or not, in our place and time in history as those coming before and after us, we are called to guard our affections, speak up for justice for the vulnerable, come alongside the wounded and weigh our leaders behavior and choices against scripture. To spiritualize known facts, to ignore signs is to be a pawn and I don’t think that honours Christ. I don’t hear you saying it does either.
You may not be called to speak up and speak out, but you are certainly part of the common being targeted by their organizations, and your voice matters.
True we could ask you the same question. True, have you ever been slanderous in your comments by your comments? It is okay for you to slaunder John MacArthur but not us. Benny and Paula have been confronted numerous times by these very people and other discernment ministries for there falsehood. Benny Hinn has yet to ever repent for anything wrong. Let me now ask you another question. Have you contacted John MAcArthur or will you continue to slander him on this blog behind his back. You need to contact him and stop slaundering him as well. These posts must be very effective. So effective that now there are plants attacking those who acknowledge that there is bad seed in the Church. I assure you they get paid to do damage control and if they keep it up I will disclose what I have learned about plants. I will share my experiences.
When the news came out that Hinns wife was seeking a divorce – Hinn seemed so suprised and amazed that such a thing was possible. He claimed that it can as a complete surprise. He had not expected any thing like this.
However it is general knowledege that they have been living in seperation for some years now.
Unbelievable that these guys have difficulty staying married when so many quite ordinary, simple people have no difficulty staying together. What makes it so difficult for them?
Perhaps their narssistic, self-centered egos prevent them from humbling themselves?
They claim to see miracles abound but are not able to hold their lives together – what a contardiction?
Perhaps they should ask for a miracle to heal their marriages and deliver themselves from their own destructive life styles
I was just asking you the same question, that is all. Wally has done nothing but state facts concerning this matter. John MacArthur is calvinist, who care. John Calvin, was a calvinist, who cares. I believe in the bible. I have yet to hear John MacArthur teach anything contrary to the word of God. I guess that does make me a calvinist, who cares. True, I was deceived by benny Hinn and Paula White for years. I came out of this charismatic movement 2 years ago. I thank God for the John Mac Arthur’s and the Paul Washer’s, Justin Peters and Bob Dewaay who preached the true gospel to me. The discernment ministries who help expose these people and the errros they teach. When God, the God of the bible opened my heart and eyes to the truth of his word, then I ddi not know where to turn. Now, God did it not a man and not me. Just because I like John MacArthur does not make me calvinsit. I believe in the bible, God word. Great testimony Teresa! And as for Benny his prophesies are false because he has a familiar spirit who tells him things and it’s not God. But Benny refuses to accept the fact that he is demonized and needs deliverance! So God and nobody can do anything for him!
There were 2 posts on July 13th 2010 stated that someone needed to check the romance in Italy between Benny Hinn & Paula White.
That had to be first hand knowledge from someone who knew they were there together and that it was not a work related trip.
The picture in the National Enquirer was taken (not printed) on July 13th 2010. My guess is that it was Suzanne Hinn, who alerted the media.
Up on Benny’s website he has a prosperity prayer shawl up for sale. Clearly, he’s trying to tell you if you buy this special shawl, you will become more prosperous as of course you claim the prosperity promises of God. This reeks of desperation for money. It’s one more proof that Benny is peddling for profit.
The Father sent us His Spirit 2,000 years ago. He is our prayer shawl now, and He’s free. Just ask Jesus to baptize you in the Holy Ghost and start speaking in tongues. It’s awesome to communicate with God that way. We certainly don’t know how to pray sometimes, but the Spirit does.

Hey, Walter. My point I was making is this. We all are going to differ in what we believe and how we read scritpure. God could care less what I believe, what John Calvin believes, what John MacArthur. We are to rightly divide the Word of truth and preach the gospel as layed out in the scriptures. If I choose to listen to John M that is my decision, and if poeple decide to keep listening to Benny and Paula after they are exposed as frauds, then sobeit. Thanks guys
God cares very much about what people believe. He judges teachers more strictly James 3.1. God has a higher standard of judgment for those who misrepresent Him whether it is Benny, Paula, John M, John C or Wally. Think of the many people to took the Kool-Aid believing Jim Jones. I don’t believe Benny Hinn was ever saved nor do I believe he will ever be saved. Its a shame the Church can’t comprehend this. No wonder we are open to deception. Like the Lord said “Tares would be PLANTED”. And we DO NOT have shepherds to warn and explain these matters to the Flock. Truly Gods Sheep are scatterred. My own observation. I feel sad in sharing this truth.
Watching the video but, I am grieved with the preacher who is preaching “in the flesh”. This is a shared grief that comes from the Spirit of God. The Lord showed me once how “angry” He gets when anyone who speaks in His name and manipulates others with theatrics-yelling, tears physical gyrations even when the message is good and accurate. God hates this very much! Sometimes I do get carried away in my posts and God is not pleased. Nothing wrong with jokes and humor. Let this wrong example of this type of preaching in this video be a lesson. Paul was a terrible speaker some say he sutterred. It is not the art of public speaking that sanctions a man or woman as being from God or having the “anointing” of the Holy Spirit. If I offended the brother speaking in this youtube vid. I am sorry, I am sure you mean well! I dont blame you, I too am still learning the way of the “Cross”[not by our own efforts -gifts , talents or resources-but by God's Spirit.]
This is an example of what i mean when i say theatrics and the gyrations made during sermons. This brings no glory to God it does bring glory to the actor preaching the gospel. God is grieved by this! There is NO glory in the flesh[the soul-its sensuous desires]. The soul is in a fallen state, our spirits are however saved and battle the desires of our soul that is intimately connected to the sensations of our physical body. Benny Hinn is king of gyrations when it comes to his preaching. They do this to cover up the missing element in a Christian service and that is God’s presence. True, you are totally missing my point. Let me say it this way. God word will be fulfilled no matter what we believe. We are to believe in God’s unadulterated word. God’s word is exalted above himself. Yes, teacher and preachers ect.. will be judged by higher standards. I will say this and you can take it how you want to. I believe in the total Sovereignty of God. We either believe that God is Sovereign over everything (including our salvation) the author and finisher of our faith or we believe in sovereignty our selfs (freewill) which totally take God out of the equation. According to what you believe, if God is Sovereign over everything including our salvation, it doesn’t matter what Benny or Paula have done. Their salvation has already been decided, so they can do whatever they want too. Sin is no longer an issue.

Another example of preaching in the flesh is appealing with deep emotional empathy. She is scary good. Hinn and White affair is a product of their cultic practices for money. Theologically,
they both know nothing about the God in the bible although the have spoken so
much about precious lord. Is it the Lord in the bible? or the lord for their stomach
and sexual desires. I was once a partner of Benny Hinn for 5 years because i was
impressed through his tv program upon watching testimonies from people get healed.
I lost thousands of Philippine currency in support this man made prosperity gospel.
lately I discovered frauds when he visited our country for crusade and those who came on the platform testifying healings were not true, simply because I know several
people who came to the crusade ailed and return home after the crusade with nothing
happen except that they leave their money on the offering boxes.
Benny Hinn said that 2004 was a year of prosperity for those who supported him.
2005 was a year of overflowing and after those years gone, his majority supporters are
still leaving in shanties waiting for his false prophecies to come. I learned nothing on

Any references? In Acts Paul was a noted speaker, insomuch he was referred to as a god!

If I may offer some insight on Paul. In Philippians 3, he puts things in perspective about true righteousness. He was teaching on how not to have confidence in the flesh. Paul was a Jew of the Jews. He was pure, in that his blood line was not mixed. Heritage bought him clout. Most Jews could not do that, because the blood lines were mixed. Paul was of the high sect, a Pharisee.
