BURLINGTON, ON, Jan. 31 /CNW/ – CTS (Crossroads
Television System) regrets that Word TV will no longer be broadcast due to its lack of compliance with the CTS Code of Ethics to which Word TV agreed under contract.
Last week, its producer and host, Dr. Charles McVety erroneously communicated that CTS was being pressured to censor Word TV; these comments are inaccurate and misleading. The fact is that Word TV failed to keep its agreement to comply with the CTS Code of Ethics and indicated a refusal to comply in the future. Unfortunately, numerous attempts by CTS to work with Dr. McVety were unsuccessful.
CTS refutes comments made by Charles McVety and Word TV. When Word TV was taken off CTS in December I wrote that Charles McVety had been dumped. CTS yanked the program temporarily while pre-screening could be put in place, after the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council ruled Word TV (McVety) was in violation of the CBSC Code of Ethics. Word TV was aired on CTS Sunday nights.
It was reported by CTV on December 15th that CTS would be returning the show to air on December 19th.
McVety went on a major defensive tear, to put it mildly, even though the CBSC ruling said 90% of the objectionable content was not objectionable. He set up an online petition. He wrote a screed about Kangaroo courts , bizarrely referring to himself in the third person. He wrote supporters asking them to contact the Prime Minister of Canada, Crossroads CEO, and to donate to his ‘defense fund’. Given CTS said they’d go over McVety’s show before they put it on air, the McVety defense fund seemed a bit much. He used his show to outright lie about the CBSC ruling, the role and make up of the CBSC, misrepresented what the ruling was actually about; said he didn’t know what ‘they’ wanted him to say, and added that CTS was being forced to censor him. He then attacked Ronald Cohen’s National Post piece, Charles McVety cannot play the victim card on Word TV. McVety told The Vancouver Sun that “The council threatened the television station. So, in order to protect their own interests, the station censored heavily, then just got rid of us, altogether.”
Interestingly I was reading the CTS Code of Ethics (written in 1998) last night while researching something else. On the Line, a CTS show with Christine Williams has interviews with Ann Coulter, David Horowitz and Pamela Geller this week and the opinions expressed are, er, well very Coulter, Horowitz and Geller. Hence the romp through the code. I digress.
Back to McVety. He wasted no time responding today.
While travelling together in Israel as part of the Christian Ambassadors to Israel mission, twenty prominent Canadian leaders vow to fight Canada’s censor board that has pressured CTS Television to remove Word TV from the air “permanently”.
No mention of the CTS Code of course, nor are the ’20 prominent Canadian leaders’ named.
Frank Diamant, Executive VP of B’nai Brith, and head of a department at Canada Christian College, appeared in two shows named in the CBSC decision. He is one of three ‘leaders’ speaking up in McVety’s response:
“The Canadian Jewish Community will rally behind Dr. McVety, the leading friendly Christian voice in our country, a clarion voice for support of Israel and the Jewish people. Jewish voices will be heard in opposition to this grave injustice by CTS and Canada’s censor board”.
Oh.
Peter Marshall, minister out of Hamilton put his two cents in:
“the censoring of Dr. Charles McVety unfortunately reveals that there are individuals and groups within our nation who are committed to removing our liberties and silencing the voices of those who may appose their philosophical, political, social and religious views. This is something we cannot tolerate or accept. Action must be taken in order to preserve the freedoms that we have always enjoyed as a nation.”
Oh.
The final word comes from Pat Francis, who runs a church and humanitarian effort out of Mississauga.
“Tried in secret, verdict decided without an appeal process is foreign to our Canadian Society. For this to be allowed to stand as is, would be against our Canadian Democratic values and heritage as a “tolerant” society
Oh.
I take it these three haven’t read the CBSC ruling, the Appendixes, the CTS Code of Ethics, decision, or talked with CTS management about the numerous unsuccessful attempts to work with their buddy. So who are the other 17 standing with McVety? I doubt we’ll ever know.
McVety also says that “Other prominant Canadian Christian broadcasters are upset.”
Oh.
Fascinating. Inquiring minds want to know. Who?
I wonder if McVety planned not to work with CTS from day one of CBSC ruling, with the goal of getting himself permanently dumped. It makes a better victim cause for him, something he’d been a bit short of lately.
While it took several complaints to the CBSC for Word TV shows airing from July 2009 to February 2010, and a non-compliant Charles McVety making false statements against CTS for CTS management to decide to enforce it’s own Code of Ethics; they have, and they are to be commended.
Now, what is The Miracle Channel and ichannel going to do about Word TV?
ichannel is a member of the CBSC, The Miracle Channel is not.
Update: I wrote ichannel. They got back to me promptly. Word TV is not in their lineup anymore and they will update their website accordingly.
Just got another email from ichannel, they terminated their broadcast agreement with Charles McVety/Word TV December 13, 2010.
Update: The Miracle Channel Program manager responded to my query and said that he had reviewed the WordTV episodes in question, started monitoring the show and have been in touch with WordTV. The findings will be reported to an internal review board.
McVety’s response to the CTS decision ends on a grandious note:
As leaders representing hundreds of thousands of Canadians, we believe the actions of CRTC, CBSC and CTS contravene the Broadcast Act and are unconstitutional. Together we call on the CRTC and Prime Minister Stephen Harper to uphold our basic human rights and to cease and desist all actions of political censorship.
McVety says he is going to take legal action.
Oh.

One thing that I find odd about all this is that the CBSC is a private, self-regulatory body. McVety is acting like this is government censorship, and it’s not. He can say what he wants on non-CBSC stations–like the Miracle Channel as Bene D notes, or on Internet-based TV.
Mr. McVety aka Dr. McVety at Word TV is a bellicose bag of wind. It’s all about him – he’s going to sue.
There is something seriously wrong with this picture – so they dropped his show. Thank goodness for those who might be exposed to his angry tirades and endless name dropping and think this guy is for real.
“He can say what he wants on non-CBSC stations–like the Miracle Channel as Bene D notes, or on Internet-based TV.”
Actually Rick, the CRTC looks very highly to decisions made by the CBSC and their religious broadcasting policy is pretty much duplicated when it comes to guidelines on ethics, so if someone were to file a complaint with the CRTC about McVety’s program being aired on a station which is not a member of the CBSC, the CRTC would typically use the CBSC as case precedent and more than likely arrive at the same conclusion. As a matter of fact, the CRTC will frequently refer complaints to the CBSC for decision if the complaint is about a CBSC member. That’s why the CBSC exists.
The nice part about the CBSC is that membership requires adherence to certain ethical and moral conduct, something McVety doesn’t understand, because he has none.
I hope the CRTC is bombarded with complaints about broadcasters, who are not CBSC members, airing McVety’s ignorant and childish antics and his constant misrepresentation of facts. I would love nothing more than to NOT see his face or hear his voice on the airwaves ever again. Just too bad I don’t have time to monitor The Miracle Channel as much as I used to.
Since the ichannel terminated their broadcast agreement in December, why isn’t Charles McVety yelling about them?
For some reason he seems to have focused on CTS.
I’ve written The Miracle Channel to ask for a copy of their code of ethics, and to ask what their decision is in light of the CBSC December ruling.
I’m curious as to who McVety plans to take legal action against.
Shows get terminated from time to time, it’s the nature of the business.
ichannel and CTS will have thier decision on record when they go up for licence renewal.
It appears more than Charles McVety telecast has been
discontinued.
The broadcast John Hagee Today is not on the air for a
second consecutive night. In its place, is replay footage
from other CTS shows. From the looks of it, it appears
to be segments from 100 Huntley Street.
Tomorrow is Mid-winter yet the “spring cleaning” seems
to have begun at CTS TV. About time, too!
According the CTS Wikipedia, McVety seems to have been pulled over some gay-bashing rants that were less that factual- commenting on “Ontario’s sex education curriculum for public schools (which he charged that children would go to school not to learn, but to become gay).” If that’s the case, it seems to be a “righteous bust” as they’d say in copland.
There are some people who don’t want their right to a good rant impinged, and McVety seems to be one of them. He has a right to free speech, but CTS also has the right to kick his keister off their channel if he doesn’t meet their specs. Being honest would seem to be one of those specs.
Seems to me that McVety has been spewing bile for quite sometime now.
His “performances” on MOJO 640 are something to behold, slanderous, inaccurate ad hominem attacks on everyone and everything he does not agree with. Facts mean little to him and ethics mean even less.
He reminds me of Ken Campbell, Milton’s contribution to far right craziness. I recall that he was also tolerated by David Mainse for quite sometime as well.
Not only McVety has been taken off the air,
but John Hagee has had his nightly program
at 11 pm taken off and replaced by a re-run of
interviews from 100 Huntley Street.
Hagee remains on air Sundays at 1 pm.
The new 11 pm program is also a repeat of the 9 pm
edition of 100 Huntley Street.
The “new” program called 100 Huntley Prime
still has yet to make it to air.
Don Simmonds and Jim Cantelon seem to have
problems with programming.
It will be interesting to see just how long it
takes for the organisation to solve its problems
and show a more varied programming choice
to its viewers instead of having to repeat
segments of its daily program again and again.
One has to wonder if possibly McVety and Levant should get together on this “legal action”? … especially with all of Levant’s experience in the ring [/Sarcasm]
It also appears that McVety is retrenching with regard to his questionable credentials. The web site for his, and I hate to refer to it as this, “college”, used to have a long form description of his credentials. However, if you look now, the only thing about them is listed under the faculty section (B.A., M.A., D.Min., D.Litt.). He no longer mentions where each degree was obtained.
An update on McVety and Word.ca
on February 24, 2011.
The site looks quite unchanged from several
weeks ago. For example, the “This Week on
Word.ca” page is dated January 30 and is program
444.
The Evangelical Christian tab on the front page
goes to an online copy of last May/June’s issue
of the magazine and there are no other copies
for 2010 and none for this year. Other years
have several issues missing.
Under the Articles tab, the last article is dated
February 10 of this year.
The tab for “Upcoming Events” shows nothing
except a large video screen promoting Besieged
which is a McVety & CCC effort to vilify the
Supreme Court.
It looks as though nobody’s doing anything at
the site. Either that or nobody cares anymore.

A further update about McVety and Word.
Today, May 22, the Word.ca site shows the
most recent program as #448. From February
to now, there have been only 4 programs on
the site.
Moreover, tonight’s program on Miracle Channel
was McVety bleating on about the “censorship”
of the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council.
He also mentioned the video Besieged and it was
the Christmas season. In other words, his program
tonight was a repeat from last December.
Another observation: There never was a mention
of Geert Wilders appearing at Canada Christian
College on the Word.ca website, yet I received an
e-mail about the event just days before it was to
happen. Is Wilders so controversial that he has
to come in nearly “under the radar” or was McVety
frightened about demonstrations outside his
property?
I get the idea that he’s a frightened man and
spouts only empty words and likes to retreat
when the going gets tough.
So where’s the discipleship in this man?
What’s the “Message” from the man;
certainly not a truly Christian one.
He reminds me of the wizard in charge
of the Emerald City in the Wizard of Oz.
All he needs now is some “Toto” to peel
back the curtain and lay it all bare for
all and sundry to see.
That should truly kill him off.

McVety seems to be under the strange impression that ranting over homosexuality and Muslims, is — “preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ”.
In fact, this is NOT preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. To preach the Gospel, one is telling the good news about how God loves EVERYBODY, regardless of background, as shown through what Jesus Christ did at the cross, without discrimination.
McVety actually doesn’t understand the Gospel. He is under the equally false idea that people are forgiven of their sins when they go foward to ‘pray the sinner’s prayer’. But in fact this is completely false, and there is no such thing as the ‘sinner’s prayer’ within the Bible.
The truth is that all mankind was forgiven of their sin, nearly 2,000 years ago, when Christ shouted out “IT IS FINISHED” from the cross — and then rose from the dead three days later. His very resurrection is the physical evidence (as the Bible teaches), that God was satisfied the full payment for mankind’s sin-debt was fully paid.
Most television preaches just haven’t got a clue about what happened at the cross. But it doesn’t stop them from pretending they do — or for begging endlessly for money.
Sorry for my rant.
Further update on McVety.
It appears that the Miracle Channel no longer
broadcasts his program. He’s not listed for
tonight or in the pdf of next week’s programming.
Is he well and truly gone from Miracle Channel
also or is there some omission I’ve overlooked?
If it is true, then where is his telecast visible
other than the internet?
His program site lists program #460 as having aired
“Sunday October 8 on the Miracle Channel at 10:00 PM (E.S.T.)”
If he is no longer on the Miracle Channel, his site isn’t reflecting that decision either.
The Facebook page still lists the program as airing on CTS Sunday nights at 11 pm.
We know that’s not been updated in 8 months.
He was airing his ad from The Institute for Canadian Values.
The Miracle Channel isn’t a member of the CBSC, but the channel does have to answer to the CRTC.
If someone hasn’t filed a complaint as yet, it’s just a matter of time.
I’ll keep an eye on the programming at TMC.

Further update on McVety
It’s November 21 and the latest program from McVety
is number 461. That’s one more program in the last
three weeks. Seems he’s running out of steam or viewers.
McVety’s website no longer offers back copies of
Evangelical Christian magazine online to read.
Only the current copy which features him and an article
about censorship–found on p. 17 is available to read.
The mgazine’s new layout looks amateurish and is rather
hard to read because it looks like it was photo-
graphed with a digital camera and posted from that.
It isn’t in pdf format. Also notable is the fact that CTS
is no longer advertising in the magazine.
McVety’s saying that his program is available on CHEX TV
Peterborough, Ontario on Saturday mornings at 11:30 am.
A visit to the CHEX website and a look at the program guide
from Bell TV (channel 217) do not show the program listed.
It’s rather a stretch to believe that 3000 people showed up
at Canada Christian College to protest the UN proposal to
divide Israel. How would they all fit in the place?
On the “This Week” page of his site, McVety said
“divide Israel in half” but what he
really means is divide Israel in two. He can’t even get a sentence
straight.
It’s a wonder that with all the amateurishness of the site and
his “ministry” that he has any contributors left.
To whom this may concern;
Regarding Bene Diction’s web article, “This time CTS really dumps Charles McVety’s “Word” TV show”, I would like to make the following comment for what it’s worth:
To somewhat support Charles McVety’s “Word.ca” program, this screwy Crossroads (pardon my bluntness) has even blocked my phone number to prevent me from calling their Prayer Line partners. THAT’S RIGHT!
Well over a year ago I called the Prayer partners at Crossroads to discuss something biblical (I can’t remember what it was). I had to strongly disagree with the guy I was speaking to. My scripturally opposing view upset the young wimpy man but we did complete the call. When I attempted to call the Prayer Line some months later, all I got was a recorded message. I tried several times after that but I still get that same recorded message.
Screwy Christians who are so biblically blind.
Warren Segal
Further update to McVety.
The first of February and the program number is still 461.
That means that he hasn’t been “broadcasting” or else
not updating the word.ca webpages. About the only new
thing on the site is listed under Articles and the site
reposts material from other sources.
So, there’s nothing new to report here.
McVety seems quite finished in the public eye.
Don’t count the old gasbag out yet. Although his show is no longer aired, he has surfaced again recently in his opposition to the Ontario anti-bullying bill and his opposition to a muslim ad that appeared in the Toronto TTC.
And, true to form, he is blatantly misrepresenting facts, and making false claims, to support his views.
