The 84 year old founder of California’s Chrystal Cathedral has been voted off the church board. The Rev. Robert H. Schuller, who started his ministry in an Orange drive-in theater more than five decades ago, has been voted off the board of Crystal Cathedral Ministries, which has been torn apart by debt and familial disharmony for the last several years.
The church has not released information about the board meeting where Schuller, 84, was ousted, but his son Robert A. Schuller, who was himself forced out of the cathedral by his sisters and brothers-in-law three years ago, confirmed it Sunday.
Robert A. Schuller left the ministry in 2007 after a bitter feud within the family. He says his father, Crystal Cathedral founder Robert H. Schuller (left), being removed from the board is just one more step toward the church’s demise.
He said his father wanted to enlarge the board, which was not received well by the others.
“A majority of that board consists of paid employees of the church and that’s a serious conflict of interest,” Robert A. Schuller said.
None of the board members or church officials could be reached for comment Sunday.
Schuller said his mother, a board member, voted against it, but was in the minority.
As the Crystal Cathedral continues to shatter, this latest ouster comes as no surprise. Shuller had a none voting role on the board as chairman emeritus. A website set up by former choir members faithful to Robert H. Schuller states the vote was 2-1.

Founding Pastor Dr. Robert H. Schuller was voted off the Board of Crystal Cathedral Ministries. Gwen Myers brought up a motion to remove and Rick Mysse and Gwen voted yes, Jim Penner abstained and Arvella voted no. They said the vote is 2-1 that’s a majority and good bye RHS. The Schullers now speak to Sheila thru an intermediary and don’t speak to Gretchen at all.
Also Bob Lee resigned from the consistory - said the Leadership was not listening to any suggestions. The Family Feud widens.
The same site reports that Robert H. Schuller’s luxury home is up for sale. Asking price 1.2 million.
Update: A cathedral spokesperson says Schuller is not off the board, he is merely not a voting member.

This 1990 article in The Seattle Times looked at financial and leadership problems with The Crystal Cathedral. It’s surprising the church didn’t go under sooner.

Sad comment .. seems when separation of truth from lies occurs at high levels in Christian circles, we rarely distinguish religious from secular.
How can a good Atheist make such a judgement? What standard are you using?
Brano ..
